Babels advice is spot-on (spent 20 years working in photo industry). Don't get too hung up on Mega-pixels if you only use it for web based stuff. My camera is only 3MP and that's ample.

OK folks I will seriously think about returning itI'm enjoying it right now, and still trying to figure out all the gizmos that it contains. So far I've been fairly pleased with the pictures I've taken with it, and haven't had any problems...but I think the Canon or was it the Nikon used the same Flash Card, so I'll go check the price difference, and if I feel it is worth it I'll exchange, till then, I'll post the pics I'm taking...Heidi

james - its no different here in the US (i'm an aussie living in texas) - I work at a camera store, and repairs can be expensive - and under warranty can take quite a few months for them to return a camera!!

Meriadoc is right, take it back. Here in Australia the process of having repairs done under warranty is a horrendously long process guaranteed to frustrate the mildest mannered person.

so do the majority of point and shoots.

sony's i can tell you now are notorious for red eye. I do not know how often i have to remove red eye from customers photographs.

I shoot in available light, and in pretty low light, i don't have much problem. The older cameras have issues focusing, more, 'hunting' in low light - thats because of a lack of contrast in a scene, all cameras will have that problem, they need contrast to focus correctly.

The only problem with dpreview's reviews... is that they don't have all of them!

Plus I'm with moondog, the more 'professional' reviews, the better.

I'm currently looking at the Sony W1 and P-series, as well as the new Canon powershots (510/520).. Anyone have any of these cameras?

From limited reviews and user comments, the new canons have their own share of trouble focusing in low light.

Well since I had to go to walmart anyways and my returns came in i went ahead and got the Kodak Easy Share cx7330...so far I think i like it well enough...then again I've only taken some photos of sheila from about 10 foot away...it has 3.1 MP; 3X Optical zoom, 16 MB internal memory, and an external memory card that holds about 100 extra pictures...All I can say is if I don't like it I can return it within the next 30 days....Heidi

Ok those who know something about digital cameras help me here, please?

I would also like to get a nice digital camera with my returns that are coming in. But, I'm not totally sure what I should be looking for

I don't want to spend more than say $200, but would like something that is reliable, does good photos, I can take pictures of the fish and tanks...you know a good all around digital camera, that won't cost me an arm or a leg...

Anyone have any suggestions? Where? What kind? How much? Ease of use? Durability?

Tanks ahead of time!
Heidi

i ordered from [link=butterfly photo]http://www.butterflyphoto.com" style="COLOR: #ff0044[/link]. they had mostly lower prices than b&h, plus they had *great* customer service (especially after the crappy store i originally tried to go to ]:|). also, if you can narrow your choices down to a few cameras, you can check out [link=steve's digicams]http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html" style="COLOR: #ff0044[/link] for a review on each of them and find out if each one has the features you really want out of them

Yeah I should have mentioned that there are probably newer models ....if you're happy with an older one though you can often get them for much cheaper than the newer ones .

B&H is great we order a lot of things from them for work, I'll get 20 packs of roll film from them...a suggestion though is to actually try the camera in the store and if you really are happy with it then order it from B&H if they're price is better as they do have a restocking fee .

3100 was superceeded by the coolpix 3200. slightly smaller.

priced around $150 currently.

no doubt though nikon have a replacement for that now.

if you want to look at prices, check out B+H Photo they have good prices, and are great for service.

Here's a good Nikon, jdubsvw has a similar model I helped him with and that' he seemed very pleased with, check older posts in PB for his work.

I'm quite pleased with the functions on the Canon A series. I have an A60 as my toss around camera, my younger sis bought the A75 after working with mine, hers has a larger LCD which is often handy.

Biggest important thing to look for in a camera if you're wanting it to work for fish is MACRO FOCUS this needs to be as close as possible 2cm is great. Next thing you want is a wide ISO reading (64 to handle outside shots 800 to handle the tanks). Also consider zoom. Only look @"optical" zoom and don't take into consideration "digital". There is more than enough free software out there that you'll be able to do that later without spending a months pay on photoshop. Finally (others will disagree with me on this) comes Mega pixles. Something as small as 2 mega pixles (what my camera currently shoots) will give you great pics for web and will handle standard print size as well as cost much less. More MP's will of course allow for larger prints but it'll cost more in the camera as well as more in the memory card. And before you run off and buy a 5 mp camera just cause it has 5mps ask yourself how many pictures you'll be enlarging to 8X10" .
Feel free to pm me, plenty of other people do

Canon A60, shot lowest resolution size of 680X460, file size further reduced in photoshop.

One Final note. If you even consider kodak or HP I hold no responsibility for sucky pictures .

That would be about Aust $250. To be honest I dont think you could even get a cheape at that price here.
At that price it would be just a camera and that is all.

My suggestion save the money as you would not be satisfied with the results.
Or look around for a second hand one there are some bargins about but "buyer beware".

well, you can start with what is most important to you: quick and easy pics or are you looking for something more, like good closeups or a great zoom, etc? for $200 you can get a decent camera, but not a great camera (unless you can get a great camera used for $200 anyway ) so what kind of pics do you see yourself taking the most of?
