OK, so, from another thread ive just seen in the general freshwater...what fish have you seen for sale, and what have you eaten that are kept in aquariums by hobbyists?
Me personally havent had that many FW fish, but this week at work we got a whole load of Pangasius catfish in, huge farmed ones from thailand..also, ive eaten garfish fillets, and freshwater crayfish..

i would never eat them as i wont.

But it isnt unheard of, eatting nile perches, large mouth basses, etc.

i have two large mouths and i have had some to eat, i wouldnt eat any of my "babies" but i have had some before. i have also seen nile perches for sale, and when i get my newest 525 gallon i would like to buy one as a pet for awhile. something about having the 2 or 3rd largest FW fish, means something to me.

Where I used to live in the states people would catch blue gill, I guess to eat. I personally loved watching them from above the surface, and when I started diving they were very fun to watch. It was them or another fish that made these amazingly round nests for their fry.

While snorkeling here adams pointed out many a fish that he likes to catch (he doesnt eat fish but I do sometimes...not if I've met it though ). I'm sure a lot of the fish you find in the average SW tank are eaten by people around here.

i've only seen fish from lakes in a tank once. guy had a perch he wanted to raise up.

as far as eating that i buy ready to cook... lobster, crab, catfish, salmon and my favorite, perch

and the rest you have catch to eat, at least where i'm at.. bluegill, sunfish, bass, perch, walleye.

but honestly, i couldnt bring myself to raising one of these about then turn around and cook them up. this is where you have to seperate between whats a pet and whats for dinner.

guess I didn't mention in that detail, thats what I've eaten, that I have *seen in aquaria, but eating what I've kept... no way hoser, all the declorinators and other additives some ppl use for water treatment never mind the meds for diseases, parasites and whatnot....not for human consumption
now catching fish, salmon in the *best !

wow lol i never stoped to consider my fish might be food in other countrys. i personnaly dont eat meat which includes fish but to each their own. also i love those "amazingly round nests" ! lol ive only ever seen them once when i was like 10 but i sat and stared at it for awhile till i figured out that they were nests and that the fish were guarding it.

I think you will find that most fish kept in Aquariums either at home or huge commercial displays are eaten by some one in one way or another. I have seen many marine fish I have caught and released also eaten. Fresh water trout, crays, and yabbies, mussels, just to name a few.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Alligator gar, and it was pretty foul too And of course barramundi I tend to eat more SW things, nothing particularly tanky.

keithgh... thanks for sparking my memory... but that is so true. when i was in brasil and went to the aqarium there. i would point out a friend to my that we would keep that fish as a pet, and she would follow me up with that they eat them. i wont go into specifically which fish we talked about, but i'll say cichlids were not on the menu

calla,
aligator garfish fillets are delicious...try them pan fried or grilled with a pernod and tarragon sauce. thicken with cream after flambaying your pernod and add cream to reduce. bingo...bloody gorgeous

edit: also works well with the same way, but instead of tarrogon and pernod, use chillis and malibu.

The only fish that I've eaten that is also kept in aquaria often are channel catfish and tilapia.

One thing I probably wouldn't be able to eat is a pleco. That'd just be too weird. But in their natural habitat they're considered good eating. Cories, too, cooked in their "shell".

"deep fried cory nuggets"

I have had garfish - they were great.

Ive had barra too. one of my favourites.

I have seen fishermen with plecos in photos and I have wondered if they ate them.

I hear gourami is really nice.
