I hate fancy goldfish... Why would people intentionally breed such deformed animals?

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

we live in a world where ppl want to play god
in some cases the benifits of science n breeding benifits us in other cases it doesnt
breeding for traits has affected us
best case is dogs
pit bulls were bred to fight sheep dogs were bred to herd cattle beagles were bred to hunt rabbits the list is endless
i dont care for the looks of any carp fancy tailed big eyed or not the point is someone does
i no alot of ppl that pay 100s of dollars for what i call a carp jsut becuz its gold
the point of the matter is dont critize what others believe is beautiful
its a personal choice jsut like if u dont like whats on tv dont bitch bout it get off ur n change the channel

Ummm - I'm with Molly. That is a Ryukin. His fins are erect, which is a good sign, and while he appears to be sitting on the bottom, I don't know that this is uncommon.

It is very possible that this is a female, loaded with eggs.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

No Tammy I don't think it should be put down, I already re-tracked that statement. But the original thought behind this thread is that people need to be carefully when breeding animals. It is alive and therefore does deserve a chance to live.

I think he is cute. I'd name him Bob and put him in my 55 gallon with a bunch of bubble-eyed, fat-headed, long-tailed goldfish and think nothing more about it.

To each his own.

John...

I don't necessarilly care for these fish either but we are talking after the fact. The fish is alive. Just because it isn't a streamline swimmer doesn't mean it shouldn't have the chance at life once created.

Struck a nerve? Yeah, I guess maybe, a little one.

Goodness Tammy.. It appears booger has struck a nerve...

Personally... I think fish should be kept as naturally as possible... With the exception of color variations. This is why I don't own fancy bettas or fancy goldfish. Breeding a goldfish to be a ball instead of a comet has to be very odd for the fish psychologically... These fish's instincts tell them that they are fast, active swimmers... If you watch a fancy goldfish they _try_ to swim like a comet, by trying to use their caudal fin which in most fancy goldfish is all but useless. They wiggle more than swim... Taking a large beautiful fish and turning it into a stubby ball, or even MAKING IT BLIND just because you like it isn't responsible.

So.. because you think the fish is appalling it should have been put down? How ridiculous is that? Wasn't there a dictator years ago that thought the same thing about a whole class of people? Oh yeah, HITLER.

There is a whole segment of the aquaria community that favors these fish. Thank goodness they don't care what you think either or there would be alot of senseless killing of perfectly good fish.

I think that yeah, it looks happy and has had a good life but you don`t really know as they could have just moved it to a nice clean tank and made it look well looked after, could be appauling conditions, never know.

Also i think, yeah, the colours are pretty good but the shape of it is bad, somebody ahs bred these hoping that as it looks weird and is not like normal goldfish he can make a lot of money, which he probably is.

Molly,

Indeed that fish is fat and happy. It's just I find it appalling that such a fish was bred. Again, just my opinion. I like you am entitled to that. *hugs*

I really don't see how this fish is any different than ... ryukins

Especially since it is a Ryukin.

Seriously, guys - that fish is obviously healthy and well-kept, for it to have reached that size. If you don't like it, don't keep them, but IME Ryukins live lives just as full as comets.

I really don't see how this fish is any different than bubble eyes, orandas, ryukins, ballon mollies, parrot fish, (instert tail shape) bettas, super veiled angles, lyre tailed swordtails, ballon rams, etc., etc., etc.

Hi,
Isn't this "style" of goldfish called a Schrumbkin,
or something similiar?
Seems like I recall this is a specialized breed of
goldfish and much sought after. Because of the way
it's "built" it should be kept with others that are
similiar, as it cannot compete for food among its
sleeker cousins.

I'm sure I have misspelled the name but then spelling is not my forte.

Frank

I do see your point, Shannen...

It is kind of a shame to develop such a robust goldfish but I guess there are hobbyists who think the fish is beautiful.

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, so they say.

Maybe it is just like in some dog breeds..where they have been bred with such exaggerated characteristics that they cannot survive, breed, or whelp on their own, some types of goldfish are bred for certain exaggerations. If so, that fish will probably live a very pampered life. At least I hope so.
