Last dive was GBR for adam and my anniversary/honeymoon. He's getting certified this weekend so hopefully we can go a bit more regular. Used to go to the quarries and freeze myself silly on weekends, since moving it's been a little harder. Best, freedom , tis fun exploring around, even if others have been there it sometimes feels like your the first. Fun to hang out and just watch the fry pecking away at a wreck, or blow bubble rings in the water, or play tic-tac-toe at a safety stop. Worst, seeing first hand the damage done to the reef, and knowing that you're part of it... Not only is the gear expensive, but it also takes a heavy toll on the environment. Funny ye should bring this up. We took my gear to the shop yesterday and got adam kitted up too. My gear is too old and can't be serviced so I needed a new second stage. Nothing says I love you like matching Regulators, and his and hers occys! Edit: occy = octopus the yellow regulator that you hand to DRO when he runs out of air 40' down. |

Babel/Adam, where you guys dive around Brisbane (or where do you intend to dive).....I went to Byron Bay last time. You will have to let me know if there are any good spots around Brisbane. I really love diving.....haven't been for probably 12 months. |

The dive shop Adams taking his course seems pretty good, I always judge a dive shop by how addicted the owners are to diving. ^_^ |

Cavey Fish Guru Posts: 2193 Kudos: 198 Votes: 0 Registered: 04-Feb-2001 | Not sure how far from the ocean you are. I would just try and find the closest dive shop and go for it. The course has alot of practical component, not much classroom work, so you would need a good body of water close by.... |

Most places like here in denver will do the portion in the pool to get you use to everything and do your actual open water certification in a freshwater lake. Get 'r done |

Babelfish Administrator Small Fry with Ketchup Posts: 6833 Kudos: 8324 Votes: 1570 Registered: 17-Apr-2003 | Adam reminded me of the fact that sometimes it helps save the environment too. For instance it's divers that are the biggest supporters of the reef, they go up there and do their best to battle it out against the crown of thorns. Yes all the equipment needs to be manufactured, and I really cant believe that the process is being done in a super green way. And yes, the boats to get one out to the reef aren't being very nice to the air, and of course there's the energy it takes for an hours worth of air fill. But if we don't have people flat out addicted to the idea of watching the fishies in their natural environment who is going to stand up for them? We dropped a few $K for adam to get certified and kitted. I was cheaper as I bought most of my gear second hand, some of which is now having to be replaced as it was out of date (and I cracked a fin ). The initial expense is a bit much, but if you can get second hand you do save a bit, and it is (usually) one time expense. After that you just have to have it serviced on a regular basis and the equipment should last you years and years. If you've never done it, call around to your local dive shops, I know any that teach PADI certification should have a discover scuba night where you can try it out. ^_^ |
