Thats the only way we feed our fish. If they don't come up for it, then they get the left overs that fall to the bottom. I just started to hand feed my Bristlenose. His so cool. He puts his head right back like a snake is about to strike, then he jumps onto your fingers. Gave me quite a fright the first time he did it. And my Synodontis eupterus I feed him also by hand. He sometimes gets a bit rough and bites the hand that feed it.
Here is some proof. Show these to your friend.

There was just a news bit on a woman who has spent several years hand feeding the bass in the pond behind her home....apparently they even come to dinner when called.

You certainly can feed wild fish as well. There are many recorded facts and photos/films on that subject

Here is a rather large Lemon Shark Cape York Aust.

I have also seen very large cod being fed and I mean huge ones in the same area as well.

Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.

Yes, it is definitely possible.

Here is a list of the fish I have hand-fed: my pencilfish, countless species of cichlids, red-tail cats, marbled acara cats, many Synodontis cats, various species of spiny eels, various species of moray eels (some up to three feet long), several species of lionfish, Amazonian leaf fish, discus, a couple loach species, tiger barbs, pearl gouramis, groupers, goldfish, sweetlips, marbled catsharks, horned sharks, stingrays, many livebearers, pacus, and a few wrasses.

Yeah, when you work at the LFS, you get to do all sorts of cool stuff like that.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Of course you can hand feed a fish! Hand feeding can be done with ANY part of the hand, not just the palm!

Sure, why not? My betta girls will jump to reach food, too. It's also fun to feed those gel-packed foods... I squeeze a lil out and the girls attack! Nearly rip the package right out of my hand.

It takes a while for the fish to get used to your hand being so close, but they're not stupid... food is food, and they're ALWAYS hungry!

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~
