Never smoked so never had to quit the stinking habbit.

It killed several members of my family.

Frank, YOU LEGEND! Take heart Doe! If Frank can then you can too. If you relapse get up and going again. Don't worry a majority of people who quit take more than one attempt.

Here's a tip.... Ever wondered why firefighters wear breathing aparatus?...correct....so they don't inhale smoke and other nasties. Cigarettes are no different. I suppose if that thought doesn't work you could try smoking while wearing breathing aparatus!

I started smoking very young - 12 years old - and smoked through all my teenage years. It caused my mother great distress, especially as her brother died in 1995 from asthma (he was a smoker all his life). All my friends smoked, I enjoyed it so I did too. My life largely revolved around smoking - always counting my money to see if I could afford a pack of cigarettes, planning to get to school earlier so we could hide around the back and smoke (as most of us, myself included weren't allowed to smoke at home), risking suspension and expulsion by sneaking cigarettes at lunchtime, etc.

Funnily enough, after all those years of sneaking around behind my parents and teachers' backs, it wasn't until I left home, went to uni and had all the freedom in the world that I actually quit. I was living with two other smokers as well. My boyfriend is asthmatic and lived with us too, so I tried to get the others to at least smoke outside for his sake. Unbelievably, they refused ]:|. I only smoked outside myself, but seeing how it affected my boyfriend's health and how selfish my friends were about their addiction, I quit. It was a few months before my 18th birthday, when I would have been able to purchase them legally for the first time .

Anyway, long story there, but basically I cut down on the number I was smoking every day, got down to one a day and then decided it was pointless to bother smoking that one cigarette. Had one left in my packet, it was still there months later and I threw it out .

I'm also an asthmatic, funnily enough it got worse after I quit, but any whiff of smoke now affects me badly. It stinks terribly as well. I can barely stand to go in a smoky club or pub. It's being banned more and more places now though, with pubs and clubs on the list for eventual banning. I can't wait!

Quiting shows a real lack of commitment on your part.

All this smoking talk is making me want one right now.

Cold turkey was the only way to go for me. It's hard sometimes but it is a decision you have to make for yourself and stick with it. I've not smoked regularly in like 6+ years and from time to time I still crave a smoke but I can bet you if I actually picked one up at this point it would taste nasty and I would be gagging and hacking and such.

Like I said. It is just a decision. You decide to quit smoking and you do it.

Good luck!

I tried smoking, a while back while I was in a very depressed and self-destructive phase of my life. I really liked it, so I made sure never to smoke another cigarette because I knew I'd never stop.

My boyfriend used to smoke (before we were going out) and he says that after he quit, breathing was soo much easier; while he smoked he said he felt like he was breathing in a milkshake all day long.

The irony is, I've always said I'll never date a person who smokes. When I first met Dan at work, he was a smoker, but when I saw him again a year later, he was a non smoker and asked me out, and now we are planning a future together. Coincidence? I wouldn't have said yes if he were a smoker, but I didn't know he used to smoke until after we started dating... We were meant to be together I guess, since he quit before asking me out.

No, Not ready yet.

I'm too stressed out with everything right now to quit, I don't need the strain of it, emotionally or physically. I really don't think I have the will power right now. I may try the patch soon though.

I've been wanting to quit for some time now and have tried in the past but I guess I wasn't ready.
I want to know what has worked best for everyone. I've tried the patch but got hives; tried the pills but they sent me into a wicked depression and am now trying the gum (which isn't so bad).

I smoked for several years and at one point when I was on an assignment overseas with the Air Force I was even smoking 3-4 packs a day. I can say that I stopped smoking cold turkey approximately 25 years ago and to this day I do not miss it. I'm like Frank I can smell a smoker even when I'm outside from several feet away.

I only quit smoking when my temper cools off, or I put the fire out with the water (one day I'll figure out that the oven is hot, and I should use potholders)

I know the feeling of being able to smell it on someone who smokes. I can even smell it on one of my students if their parents smokeI know both of my parents smoked 2-3 packs a day, and know when my mom tried to give it up it was painful for us all...

But, I also remember when my Nanny went into the hospital the first of the last times for an Angioplasty. They told my Poppa that noone would be able to smoke around her again. My Poppa showed his true love for her, by throwing them away right there and then, and never touched another one again. Unfortunately about 2 years later he was diagnosed with lung cancer, which he beat. But, then about a year after that he was diagnosed again with lung cancer, and this time it was too late:#(

So folks if you don't smoke, don't start, and if you do smoke stop now!!! I've heard that it takes about 12 years (if I remember correctly) for your body to recover from smoking.
