I quit smoking lots of times the last time for about 8 years now. I remember trying the nicotine gum one time and starting back smoking as well. It was quite the buzz. Regular gum isn't the same after using the nicotine gum.
I finally quit cold turkey, if you get past the first couple of weeks it gets easier. Honestly, there are still times when I miss smoking but not enough to go down to the corner and get some cigarettes.

I think smurfs idea is genius. I never thought of doing that with smoking before. I used to drink tea with 2 teaspoons of sugar. I gradually added less sugar every time untill i didn't want it at all. It's a much better idea than going cold turkey, covering yourself with patches then going through 10 packs of gum in a day

I said yes - twice - maybe that's tried and failed!
I used a declining scale over 4 months - started with a pack a day which was what I smoked, next week, max 19 a day etc - until you are at 1 a day - takes about 4 months but it's great for nicotine withdrawal, very slowly - also makes you think with every one you smoke - do you really want it now or save it for later if all I can have is X number today.

but if u need encourangement, think of:
1) you are being selfish, by giveing other people black lungs,(not u, but in general)
2) your not doing urself anyfavors.
3) bad for you look.:88) smokeing was cool in the 70 not the 2000's.
4) causeing your family pain: if u die early from smoking, but will cause ur family pain that can be avoided.
5) cancers
6) setting bad examples
7) expensive

hey that may be though to look at, but it is the truth, and keep looking at it if you need help quiting. hey u got my support./:'

I have smoked for years... about 29 years. I have tried the gum, being hypnotized, acupressure, the pills, and the patch.

I have used the patch the last three times. I get down to the lowest dose and BANG, something happens and I start smoking again.

I figure one of these times I will make it.

My Dr. asked if I minded quitting, once when I was on the patch... I said.. I don't but the people I work with do (guess I get a bit cranky)

Voted for: Never Smoked

However, I've known many people who have.

My favorite inspirational story to tell people who are considering quitting: My grandfather (paternal) smoked for decades, but it was at a family wedding that his niece (then in her 20's or so) looked at him and told him that if he ever wanted to see his grandchildren, he'd quit. He did just that, cold turkey after who knows how many years of smoking (30+).

His niece is now in her 50's and in my lifetime, my grandfather never smoked. He did die, but from cancer, not as a result of smoking. And he saw every single one of his grandchildren. The youngest was around ten when my grandfather died.

My grandmother (on my mom's side), died a long, painful death from emphysema. It's horrible to watch someone be continually sick from bronchitis, hacking and wheezing and to be out of breath from climbing one short flight of stairs. She had smoked since she was 16.

Her husband died three days after my sister was born (we're the eldest grandchildren), from complications from smoking all his life. He didn't live to see his four other grandchildren.

I have friends that smoke. At least two of them are in the process of quitting. One quit cold turkey when he woke up, on his knees, fighting for breath. Hacking and gasping for ten minutes or more will frighten you into quitting, I guess.

Hi,
At one time I started getting dizzy and light headed.
I went to the doctors and he suggested I had the symptoms
of "Minaires Disease," and that I should cease the use
of caffine, and nicotine. The spells were nearly
incapacitating, and so I went home and quit, cold turkey.

I decafinated myself that day, and threw my pipes and
specially blended tobacco away. To understand how hard
that was, you have to realize that I'm retired Navy.
My hand has a "permanent" crook in it to accomodate a
coffee mug, and my teeth have wear patterns that a dentist
will instantly spot as someone who has smoked a pipe long
term (40+ years in my case). I now drink decafinated
coffee, the same quantities as before (gallon a day),
and decafinated soda. I've not smoked in years.

I don't miss it a bit. Frankly, I can now smell a person
who does, several feet away, and sometimes it's over
powering! My sense of taste came back, and while I still
take the top off the pepper shaker ( you have to wear
your arm out getting enough out of a typical one) I have
done away with the use of salt for all but corn on the cobb.

You can do it. Some need help from patches and such.
Others need groups. The hardest thing is when one person
of a two smoker couple, wants to quit. Then you can't get
away from it and detox.

The message I give you is that YOU CAN DO IT.

Frank
