Hi everyone. I was trying to find a homemade fish food recipe, but nothing was coming up. So i made one myself.

Zix Stix's Fish Food!!!

FYI: I did not measure how much of each thing i put in so just eye-ball it.

Here are all the equipment you need:

~Blender or food processor.
~Measuring Equipment (mL)
~Some plastic bowls
~A square or rectangle pan for freezing.

Food:

~1 can of tuna in water, some cooked shrimp, some veggies such as carrots, cucumber, lettuce, etc. Crushed multi vitamins or liquid vitamins, Fish Food Flakes, and some algae pellets, 100-150 ml of unflavoured gelatin.

Steps:

1. Grind the multi vitamins and Algae pellets into dust and leave in blender.

2. Add All veggies into blender and blend until its pretty much in tiny pieces. Then put crushed veggies in a bowl.

3. Crush Tuna, Shrimp, and Flakes next. then add to veggies.

4. Mix well (should be the consistency of mud). If not then add seom water.

5. Boil 100-150 ml of water and add to 100-150 ml of gelatin powder. Mix until gelatin powder is all gone.

6. Mix Veggies and meat with gelatin and then smooth out on a rectangle pan and put in fridge for 1 hour then put in freezer until the next day.

7. Cut in small chunks and put into freezer bags and then serve to fishies ^^

8.

Ps: I have not yet fed my fish these and I do not know if it will be a hit. but tomorrow i will let you all know if they like it.

If any1 else has a recipe post on here and let me know.

Thank you!!!

Cheers,

~Zix Stix~

The food mix sounds OK there is a product called Agagar or very similar name (health food store) it is a natural algae used as a thickner in cooking. I have used it when I was mixing up a brew too many tyears age.

I certainly would not be using the vitamins as they for are human use only and could be too strong. Another thing (cooking reference) if you dont freeze and seal it correctly you will get a frost bite on the food and this actually takes out all the goodness in the food.

Yes i sealed them properly.

And for the vitamins...

I did research on the vitamins and it said it was ok if you used baby multi vitamins.

And plus I only used 2 vitamins so they wont be able to overdose because there is alot of food and only a tiny bit of baby vitamins...

Cheers,

try Fishtamins or similar.

Agar agar might be the stuff Keith? Stringy clear stuff from the asian shop?

Might omit tuna from the mix in favour of another fish, tuna are well known for hoarding the heavy metals and pollutants from their pelagic filter feeding prey, its one of the reasons tuna isnt recommended for pregnant mothers. In small fish, large amounts of tuna flesh may lead to them picking up the heavy metals, possibly leading to cancer and possibly some systemic poisoning.

I pretty much depend on homemade mixes for all of my staple fish foods these days(both in the home and dorm tanks), so if I may, here are a few things to consider;

Pretty much everything git said. Generally speaking, farmed white fleshed fishes are used in feeding. Very lean and very clean. Carp, catfish, and tilapia are good. The former may require extensive bone picking, though.

There are certain nutrient supplements that cater to specific variants of fishes. Use those over what you're currently using (I've even heard of individuals using centrum silver in their fish mixes); there are powders for cichlids of all kinds and loricariids, at least that I'm aware of. If you can't obtain these, just go with a splash or two of V8.

Thickeners and binders include agar and gelatin. Anything else and you're paying too much. The amount of gelatin suggested in the recipe is a bit much, especially for livestock that prefer their food a bit loose (sifters, maybe, and inverts).
