I had to get a filling today, and of course they numbed my mouth to do it. Everything was fine and it didn't hurt at all when they were doing it, but now several hours later it's starting to hurt. Not the tooth, but the area in my mouth where they had to numb it... It's really sore. Does this always happen?

I had another filling when I was a little kid, and I don't remember any soreness after that one.

Sticking a huge frikkin needle into your gums doesn't hurt? I'm not particularly squirmy when it comes to pain, but I'd rather not experience getting my wisdom teeth pulled again.

It isn't where they put the needle in (well it is, but not just there), it's the entire area where my mouth was numb that's sore. Basically the whole left side of my mouth, including the cheek, is in pain. I can barely open my mouth because the muscle is so sore.

the muscle in the mouth (and your mouth in general) may be sore because your mouth was pried open for a while so they could do the drilling and filling. Especially if it was one of the back teeth. I usually notice the needle most where they inject it... once it's not numb it hurts!

The pain is quite common after a filling. When the needle is injected it disrupts nerves and muscles around the area causing aches. It should settle down soon enough. If its really sore take a mild pain killer. (dont know any brandnames for stuff there, but panadol or some such thing)

I took a few Advils and went to sleep for awhile, and when I woke up, most of the pain was gone.

It still really hurts if I try to open mouth even enough to take my pills, though.

I was given nitrus (a light dose for roughly 30 mins...the dentist people didn't think it would be enough anyway, but apperantly it was too much) and novicaine during my last filling, and I had some strange reaction to the nitrus. The effects of a mild dose of nitrus usually wear off after a few minutes, but I was barely aware of anything for the rest of the day...all I remember is falling, being dizzy, being disoriented, and very confused. Needless to say, I don't remember if anything hurt or not, so I can't help ya there...

When I had some teeth pulled once, I remember a lot of pain for the following few days, but that was removing entire teeth, not just a filling.

I hate dentists *shudders*

I know the past couple of dentist visits have left me sore, but their directions was to to 500 mg of Naproxyn every 4-6 hrs as needed. Naproxyn is only Aleve, or the generic....go get some take 2, see if it helps, it should...Feel better, Heidi
