Let me see if I can estimate the size of the place...

I think the living room is about 3m x 3m (10ft x 10ft)... the bedroom's probably the same again... and the kitchen and bathroom combined would be about the same again. So that makes 300 square feet, right?

So yeah... it's little. They were asking $200 per week rent ($857 per month) but I got them down to $185 because of all the work I'm going to have to do on it. That's about $793 per month I think. It's no wonder I can't afford to buy a place! :%)

wow...

*sits in 900 sq ft apartment that he pays $345/month for*

Apartments are only referred to as apartments when they're in the "specialized block" here hetu. A duplex would be if that house was split into two seperate living quarters, so I guess yours would be a triplex...

I guess that's one downside to being a kiwi is that you're stuck without much room for lots of money. And you said moving to the US wouldn't work why?!?!?

As for the hat, it was everything I could do not to get my NEW one stolen by Dani before I left Cincy...]:|

WOW!

Make that two reasons not to move to kiwiland :#( :#(.

My place (whetu knows) costs me about her weekly rent monthly, a bit more because co-op fees are about the same. It did just go up in value though.... too bad I'd have to move somewhere where housing prices are much cheaper for it to make any difference ...

Lemme see... the place I'm in now has 520 square feet for $300 per week (around $1285 per month). I don't know how that compares with the rest of the world, but it's the going rate in Auckland. My new place will be closer to the city, but my old place was nicely renovated before I moved in.

Keith, I think the Australian equivalent would be to look at house/rental prices in Sydney. Auckland is the biggest city in NZ and it's where most of the immigrants come to, as well as domestic migration. So there's always demand for houses and rental accommodation.

To buy that house in my picture would probably cost around $450,000 - I bet it would sell for twice that in Sydney!

Are you serious.

Are they paying you or are you paying them. The amount of work you will have to do plus the cost the land lord must be laughing.

I have no idea of the market over there but I know you can do a lot better in Aust (depending on location)

Personally I would think several times before I acted on that one.

You might be able to find some one to share a better home but that can have its problems as well.

All the best no matter what you do.

PS does it not have to pass some sort of health/council before it can be rented.

Keith.

Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.

Due to my current financial circumstances I'm going to be moving to a much smaller home. Just when I thought a home couldn't get much smaller than the one I'm living in now.

I'm going to be moving for the first time on March 8, to my aunt's house (which is close to my new place) then spending a couple of weeks working on my new place before I move in on March 22.

The 'new' place is in rather a state of disrepair. The landlord is getting an electrician in to replace all the smashed power points and to install a light in the living room. Then he's getting a plasterer to repair the holes in the walls. I'm thinking of getting the locks changed because the last tenant seems to have been a bit of a lout...

It's my job to repaint the interior, and sand down and polyurethane the floors. Unfortunately a previous tenant has painted all the skirtings and trim dark purple, which makes repainting a bit of a pain. The floors are stained very dark brown and the place is small and dark, so it really needs a bit of brightening up.

The most interesting thing is that the kitchen is on a major lean and has no cabinets in it. I'm going to severely test my carpentry skills by building cabinets so the counter-tops are level - which means the cabinets themselves will need to be on about a 10-degree slope!

But the two most important things:
1) There's room for my tank!
2) There's room for my sofa that folds out into a bed for all the FP people who keep threatening to come and visit me!

So anyway I might not be around much during this busy time. I'll be signing the lease on Monday, then the fun starts. I haven't quite worked out how I'm going to deal with my fish during this two-step move. Obviously they can't move into the new place until all the toxic fumes from the paint and polyurethane have gone. They might have to stay with my aunt in the mean time.

three

me on the right, someone else on the left, and another in the back. In total 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and room to park 1 car. My flat is self-contained so I have a kitchen (those windows) a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom. My car will live out on the street.

By the way, would you North Americans call that an 'apartment' or is an apartment always in a specially built block? If it's not an apartment, what is it?

Here a 'flat' can refer to part of a divided house (like this one) or one in a block. Right now I live in a block of flats. My new home has much more character.

I found a picture

The windows on the right of the pic are my kitchen windows. My 'front' door is around the right hand side of the house.

It's quite a nice house and I believe the flat on the left is rather nice inside. I think it was just the last tenant who wrecked my place, but after I do it up it will be a pleasant little home.

oops thanks moondog for pointing out my date error!
The work I did in Calgary last year was more demolition than building - demolition is FUN! (by the way, if there's demolition, is there also molition?)

Billy, thought you'd never get the hint - so get over here and start building! I could even lend you a hat to wear while you work...

sneaky_pete, I don't think we have mobile homes over here like you do... This place is a wooden villa built as a family home in the early 1900s. It has now been converted into three flats (apartments). One day I dream of owning my own home but right now that dream is further away than ever!

Whetu, I sure do know what its like to move, I am going onto move number 3 in less than 2 years!
The current landlords are space pigs, so their 3500 sq foot house is not enough for them, they want to be in our 850 sq ft as well. So, when my boyfriends inheritance money came to be enough, we purchased our own home!
Lucky for us, it has been totally redone, no purple skirting thank god !
Are you moving into a Mobile Home? Thats what we just purchased. But, its beautiful because its been totally renovated. You should tell the landlord this: If he renovates the place and makes it up to snuff, it will triple the value instantly. Makes sense I think.
Good luck with your move, and with your cabinetry!

hetu's THAT GOOD... Good luck, I'd be more than happy to help you out with anything I can since I've got a background in carpentry, but unfortunately, there's a limit to how much I could actually do for you...

how are you going to move on may 8 and then move again on march 22?

i'm sure you'll do fine on those cabinets, didn't you get some practice in when you were in calgary last year?
