So here's the question....

What can I cook? I mean, I have plug-in appliances (beg steal borrow etc) but most require a stove component to the recipes.

Can one live on waffles??

Can you get a plug in Mini electrical stove. Do you have an Electrical fry pan. Borrow a Webber BBQ if you can.

First I would be concerned to what caused it. Is it covered by home insurance. Have you contacted the gas people. Finally make sure it is turned off at the meter if possible.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Microwave and a blow torch? You can still bake if the oven works..

Its quite scary how some "microwave " experts cook almost anything and manage to make it taste reasonable. I still have a vague fear of glowing in the dark after eating too much microwave food, ever since my mom had an old one in the 70's, you could actually feel your skin prickle when you walked past it.

if i lived after eating food from an "Easy-Bake Oven" as a kid, (you know the one that cooks brownies with a 40 watt lightbulb?) then i imagine you could live off waffles... go for some microwave dinners, or a crock-pot even.. .and DEFINATELY call the gas people and figure out what the heck happened..

I lived off of a microwave and a sink for about a year (though its hard to think of when I have my stove) Anyway, almost anything you can make on a stove you can make in the microwave (except for raw meats, they wont cook properly, but you can buy 'precooked' ones if you must have meat) TV dinners are good, soup, ramen, waffles, ect. Almost anyfood you could possibly want is in some TV dinner somewhere...or a TV breakfeast....

I am learning to love nuked food
Yesterday it was pumpkin risotto (packet) and tonight I did lemon couscous with no instructions

Its not covered by insurance, or more, it IS, but we have a high excess, so it would only cover it if we wanted to buy the latest in kitchen technology bummer.

Oh well. I'm expanding my horizons this way learning to cook with varied appliances and avoiding a thumping great hole in the bench

You could always buy a portable gas stove - like a camping one. We've used ours on the kitchen floor before when living in a house with an electric stove and the power went out at dinner time. Felt very primitive! The gas could get expensive after a while though. A cheap-ish barbecue might be another option - you can't use it for usual stove stuff of course, but you can do a lot with a barbie!

Excess on the insurance turned out to be quite high, so we just bought a new one outright.

Apparently exploding stoves are common *sigh* The guy said about 6-8 years and they usually crack.

Anyway, we bought a new 5 burner whirlpool dealy as we got a good deal on it. Now we have to save up for something to cook on it

Piccies coming later

Common?!? I've never heard of that happening before...
Seems like a safety flaw. Weird.
See, that's one reason I'm really glad we rent. Yeah, there's drawbacks. But we had the garbage disposal get stuck last month, and who paid the $90 plumber bill? Not us...

We've used ours on the kitchen floor before when living in a house with an electric stove and the power went out at dinner time.

OOh! Please be careful about using portable stoves/grills inside. I've heard about people getting carbon monoxide poisoning from this.
