Well I bought a Brand new Mitsubishi Lancer 3 months ago and it has its first problem. The front passanger side brake knocks when you apply the brakes. This mainly happens first thing in the morning but has been happening when I get to work as well.

I ran mitsubishi up to see when I can book it in and if it would cost me to get it fixed. He said it would as the brakes are a serviable item and so it will cost me.

My point is it is only 3 months old. Should this be covered under the warranty??? Or will I have to pay for this to be fixed???

Appart from this I love my car

Not sure what the problem could be...maybe a warped rotor? Not really sure. Can't say I've heard of knocking brakes though.

Usually typical wear items are not covered under warranty, things like brakes, belts, and other similar things. Since they are all products that are supposed to wear by themselves they usually wont' fix them under warranty.

Although if you complain enough, there is a good chance you can get it fixed. I got my brakes repaired under warranty on two ocassions because the rotors kept warping...at like 14k miles. They eventually broke and did it for free

99% of the time brakes are not under warrenty, because you can go around, and drive around with your brakes on all day, and get a new pair of brakes a day.

I dont understand what you mean by knocking, but your roter is probably warped, or there is something on your roter that is making it make the sound.

if you *JUST* bought this car, there is no reason whatsoever that they should charge you to fix whatever problem you have, especially if it's a new car. i had my civic for only a month when i got an engine light warning. i took it to the dealer and they said i had a misfire and they were going to charge me $50 to change the spark plugs i complained about how it was supposed to be a certified vehicle and i only had it a month, how could it be broken after a month and they backed off and gave it to me under warranty. you just have to be firm with them and they should fix it for you for nothing.

if it is just the pedal going up and down, it is suppose to do that (to a little extent)

Hi
If your brake pedal goes "up and down" then that is the
result of warped rotors. As the pads press against the
rotor, and the warp (high part) comes along they are
pressed back into their housing and this is transmitted
through the brake fluid back to the pedal that will then
rise. Conversely the low part will allow the pads to
move out of their housing, using more fluid, and the
pedal will move down.

Warped rotors are generally the result of over heating
caused by excessive braking, riding the brakes (particularly
for an automatic transmission vehicle), or defective
manufacture.

As was stated, brakes and brake parts are generally not
covered, as there is no way to guarentee(sp) them against
abuse by the owner. You could, and should, hold firm that
it is a new car, 3 months old, with xxx miles on it and
force a repair. But I doubt that you can argue the same
premise after that repair.

Frank

it takes alot to warp a rotor on new cars

Go take your front passenger wheel off. Look at the caliper/rotor assembly, and if it says "made in japan", then it's probably broken

Well it happens mainly when I back the car out of the garage. Like when I put my foot on the brake you can here a knock outside the car. It won't do it again in that direction but if I go in the opposite direction and put the brakes on a gain it will happen. However it doesn't happen much after the brakes have been used for a while.

The guy in Mitsubishi said it was normal??? I wouldn't think a knock in the brakes is a normal thing. Also he said that they might need lubing up again.

It is only 3 months old. As saying from brand new.

Well I guess I will just have to wait until Saturday when It is booked in. I will be staying like 3 doors up from the dealer and think I might go get him to show him what it does?? Is this a good Idea as I am not sure if it will do it when I get the car there but can garantee that it will when I first get into the car.

hey, if he's willing to do it, then it's a great idea. that doesn't sound normal for *any* car to have noisy brakes like that. squealing is normal, clunking is not

sounds like ur caliper is sticking thats all the easiest way to fix it is find a good patch of road wit no other cars whine it out in reverse crank the wheel left hard n lock up the brakes then shift into a forward gear n hammer on the gas the brakes will lock up if u do it rite all the wieght in the front end of the car ( lancers r balanced almost as good as a neon sx2.0 )will go onto the wheel the heat will build up n when u finsihed the 180 turn n hammer on the gas itll straighten it rite out i do it alot much easier in a standard tho the more practical way is to take the wheel off n file down the edgfe of the caliper n make sure the pads r seated rite

First thing I would do is make sure that is the brakes that are making that noise. Have someone else reverse it and be sure that is where it is coming from.

as far as only when you first start the vehicle that makes no sense as far as a brake issue is concerned, it would be a problem at all times.

Either way it is NOT normal. I would put the car on some jack stands take off the tires and see what you have going on, but thats just me It is so easy to sit here and diagnose without having the vehicle right in front of us to see what is going on. If the car was bought used then forget any help from the dealer. If it was brand new I would push hard for free fix. As hard as pusueing it to the manufacturer if necessary. While brakes are not covered, a well-written letter detailing the problem should clear this up; because your noise is not indicative of normal wear and tear but instead a factory issue.

Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn.

It's all good now.

Took the car in and they fixed it straight away. I was there for like 25 minutes. THey just lubed up the brake calippers.

Didn't cost me anything either. So I am happy for that.
