The Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit, Michigan, the very first public aquarium in the US and oldest, is closing after 101 years due to budget cuts. Logistics are still being worked out. Its small, but historical. ![]() http://www.freep.com/news/statewire/sw110100_20050114.htm A little more background: http://www.digitalcity.com/detroit/entertainment/venue.adp?sbid=115585567&type=overview Last edited by Cory_Di at 14-Jan-2005 22:18 |

We seem to just let the deteriorate here in Detroit, or let the scavengers have them to tear apart over time for money. There has been so much history here that is now gone and another piece is disappearing. I regret not making it down there this past summer as I had planned. I just didn't make time, and quite frankly, wanted to go with a group of people because it is somewhat of a bad area. That just didn't materialize. The breeding program for endangered and extinct species is the part that saddens me most. What will become of that? Supposedly, Zoo Director Kagan, is trying to persuade the city fo make a super aquarium on the riverfront to bring in revenue. I truly hope that happens. I've been to the one in Chatanooga, TN and just loved it. I would love to have something like that in my backyard. One other thing I'll miss about it, was that I was hoping to strike up a relationship with some of the experts at the Belle Isle Aquarium. They had some real winners there from what I understand and it would have been neat to pick their brains. |
