Lindy Administrator Show me the Shishies! Posts: 1507 Kudos: 1350 Votes: 730 Registered: 25-Apr-2001 | My kitchen sink is blocked. Should I just call my plumber friend or is there something I can do myself? I didnt realise it was so now the water has risen into the sink. I dont really want to pull the pipes apart. I have horrid visions of gross water everywhere and my kids trying to help in only a way that a 4 and 2 yo can! Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. Is it just the kitchen sink or is the toilet filling up / bubbling when a shower or washing machine is run as well? (indicating a blockage further downstream in the underground pipework affecting the whole house) You could try using a "Draino" type product for temporary relief, but if its tree roots getting into the pipes then it will only be a very temporary solution. Your best bet really would be to get your plumber friend out to have a look. They will probably end up putting a "worm" down the drain to locate and hopefully clear the blockage. The last thing you want is to have the plumbing block up completely at night or over the weekend and be forced to pay after hours call-out rates on top of whatever they are going to charge to do the work. Good Luck G_T Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic. |

You could try following up the draino with that, it'll send shots of compressed air down which may free up the blockage if it's minor. The Amazon Nut... |

Plumber friend is going to come tomorrow. It is just the pipe for the kitchen sink. I am guessing probably the dish washer wont go too well either. All it cost me was a cup of coffee and lunch. Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes. |

Babelfish Administrator Small Fry with Ketchup Posts: 6833 Kudos: 8324 Votes: 1570 Registered: 17-Apr-2003 | We had tree roots get into the toilet drain at the rental house....wasn't pretty !!! That gunk does tend to build up, specially if you get a lot of grease down the drain (it's best to scrape that into a container once it's cooled and toss it in the trash). When I remember to do it I usually dump some baking powder down the drain. Drain Cleaner: For slow drains, use this drain cleaner once a week to keep drains fresh and clog-free. 1/2 cup baking soda 1 cup white vinegar 1 gallon boiling water 1/2 a used lemon Pour baking soda down drain/disposal, followed by vinegar. Allow the mixture to foam for several minutes before flushing the drain with boiling water. Much better than draino at keeping the pipes clear, but if it's really built up you'll have to go for the industrial stuff (remember kids, draino is not for tanks! *snicker snicker*). Glad you got everything straight, it's good to have friends ^_^ |
