Can anyone recommend a printer/s for use with a home PC, mainly for photo printing? I need it to have a (reasonably) good quality printout, but without mega expensive cartridges that run out really quickly and one that I could pick up at a decent price second hand..

I've spotted a Samsung SCX-1100 Printer Scanner Copier 2nd hand on eBay for £30, but I have a feeling the cartridges - which aren't cheap at about £15 each - will no doubt run out too quickly for their price. Anyone have any experience of this printer? I found one single review on the web and thats all.

Any advice on printer purchasing, folks?

I have an epson stylus photo 1280 (1290 in the UK)

I pay about $30 for my color cartridges, and about $15 for my blacks - but they last a looooong time - I regularly print 8x10s at 1440 dpi, and occasionally 2880.

It also has the ability to print upto 13x19 as well as rolls of paper, 13x44 inches for panoramics.

buy an epson or a cannon. the best bet is to find one that has separated colors (as opposed to one big color cartridge consisting of all colors). once you have that narrowed down, then you can decide which features you prefer, but i will only buy epson or canon printers for *any* printing.

I have a Canon S520 with seperate colour cartridges.

There are many people who swear by getting their cartridges topped up. Again the are just as many and the printer companys saying don't do that.

I wait until K Mart have a discount throughout the store and buy up my supplys then, this is a way to keep my costing down and at the same time having no problems.

Another tip is buy only quality printing paper Canon have their own. If you are having any problems using only the same company's ink and paper. It can usually be solved very quickly without any buck pasing.

I too have a canon. It's the Canon S800 Photo Printer and does an awesome job without sucking your ink dry. It has a different ink cartridge for each color which makes it simpler/cheaper to refill the ink. At the stores over here the replacement cartridges go for about $12 but I found a cool website called "inksell.com" that sells all kinds of ink for a significantly cheaper price regardless of what kind of printer you have.

Good luck!

Epson, definately. The cartridges can be replaced seperately. Cannon is also good. Hp and lexmark are cheapish, but the cartridges are uber pricey. I have a simple Epson stylus C64 (lowest model I saw) and if I set it to photo setting and use good paper the quality is, to me, excellent. don't do many photos though. But my dad has the same printer and loves his.

I'm so adjective, I verb nouns!

I have an Epson cx5300. The only problem I've found, and I don't know if this would be a concern of yours, is that you can't refill the cartridges. Or at least, they say that the newer Epson cartridges are not designed for refilling. I read this as deliberately trying to stop people from refilling their cartridges, hence must buy their brand. However, there are compatible cartridges available for these newer Epson printers. I am otherwise very happy with mine!
