Pausing for a moment to think, this is probably lamentable of me, but I cannot remember how I first encountered FishProfiles! And, unreliable as my memory may be in this regard (I tend to fill up the available space with taxonomic names and care/maintenance details ) I suspect AquaRank didn't play a particularly big part. Just as a quick check, I fired up Google and typed in "fish profiles", and lo and behold, this site is the top entry. Whether it was back in 2003 when I first joined is a moot point, but I suspect that as long as we are high up the listings on Google, we'll attract a fair few new members that way.

Now, I have to say I'm a tad disappointed at certain less than positive comments made above. Wind the clock back a couple of years, and among the 'newbies' of that time were ... Toirtis, Cory_Addict, jasonpisani and my good self.

Following after me were Sirbooks, Cup_of_Lifenoodles, Dr. Bonke, Clownygirl and Doedogg. All of whom struck me as eminently sensible from the word go.

Usually, if someone joins this Board, they can be credited with having sufficient functioning brain cells to want to know more, and care for their fish properly. I think we owe it to them to give them a helping hand, because they could in the fullness of time surprise everyone and end up in the Shini/Toritis camp with respect to their command of the hobby. And if we gave them a leg up to this exalted status, they would probably remember who helped them out when they were still wet behind the gill plates, and hopefully continue the altruistic tradition that has been set here by several Members.

Just a thought.

Wow..I mean if you don't want to vote thats fine, but don't be calling people idiots. I think you reasoning is quite silly Dave....but to all their own I guess.

Nobody asked you.

Kudos Bensaf on attempting to clear this up

I agree. Shows the new moderators are doing their job.
But you have a better chance of curing cancer than 'clearing' things up with me.

but I guess some people just are looking for something to argue about.

Eh? This isn't an arugment.

Dave, don't want to step on your toes, as obviously this voting thing get's your ire up, but I notice that you're a paid premium member.

I've always felt that one of my best ways of voting for anything is through my pocketbook, and not to discourage you from continuing as a premium member, but if this site has too much information that is useless to you, why do you continue to be a "paid" member.

I paid for a premium membership once. It expired a long time ago. I use the forums, so I made a small contribution to the site to help pay for server fees (or whatever the money goes to).
We should only have to pay once. I don't think a bit of colour and fancy writing is worth paying for every year.

From the attitude of your comments, it's almost like you're saying you knew it all when you first started in the hobby and didn't have to learn anything.

Yea, sounds about right.

Isn't that the real purpose of this site to help educate the uneducated and also learn from those that know more or have experiences in areas that you may not have.

Yes.
But if new people actually searched the forums, they would find most of their answers. It would cut a lot of the crap out of the site.

And if you don't want to vote, then don't vote. I don't see anyone pointing a gun at your head.

Why did anyone question what I had to say then? They obviously wanted to change my opinion and get me to vote.

This thread hasn't made any progress at all.

It's kind of like being a member of a health club or gym and then only going once a month looking in the mirror and saying why am I not improving. You only get out of it what you are willing to put into it.

Of course it's true. Yes the quality of knowledge can vary, but it all knowledge. We can learn as much from peoples mistakes as from anything else. More members, more diversity, more information.

Bull crap.
We have almost 10000 members here, add another 10000 and I bet we'll still have a lot of the same useless information that we do now.

Yes new members will come from a variey of sources. Aquarank is one of them. Actually there's probably a better chance of getting more advanced hobbyists thru aquarank, They are more likely to want to participate in the most popular forums.

It would be interesting to see how many of our members found this site through aquarank.

Rivalry is competition. Competition is good. More competition means the site has to keep ahead in quality to stay in front of the competition.

There's been an increase of aquarium sites over the last few years, have the Fish Profile forums improved over that time?
If anything, they're getting worse.

A lot of the members are here because they like the feeling of a 'family' site. Not the amount of information in our forums. This place is highly moderated and every little argument gets deleted. People don't like conflict for some reason.
Removing the Recovery Room would increase the quality of the site, IMO.

Ranking is also an aid to pulling in sponsorship and advertising agin leading to benefits for site and members.

We've been at the top of aquarank for pretty much the whole time fishprofiles has been listed. Has the quality of the site increased since we've been there?

It's funny how all of this came from me refusing to vote.
My opinion doesn't change, so this can be dragged on for aslong as you want.

Hell no.

More people = more idiots.

Well I'll assume for the moment you're not including youself in that statement

"The more new members we get the greater the database of knowledge we have."
Not necessarily.

Of course it's true. Yes the quality of knowledge can vary, but it all knowledge. We can learn as much from peoples mistakes as from anything else. More members, more diversity, more information.

Do you honestly think new people to the hobby will go to aquarank and choose a forum there?
Most people would go to a search engine and type something like 'aquariums', 'fish profiles', etc.

Yes new members will come from a variey of sources. Aquarank is one of them. Actually there's probably a better chance of getting more advanced hobbyists thru aquarank, They are more likely to want to participate in the most popular forums.

I'm all for helping the hobby, but aquarank and any other place that ranks sites is useless and just causes stupid rivalries.

Rivalry is competition. Competition is good. More competition means the site has to keep ahead in quality to stay in front of the competition. Basic business, market forces and all that. This is good for the members.Ranking is also an aid to pulling in sponsorship and advertising agin leading to benefits for site and members.

"The higher the rating the better it is all round."

So a site that has more members results in a site of higher quality?
I don't think so.

"causes stupid rivalries"

Does that go for TV ratings as well. The higher the rating the better it is all round.

They'd come across aquarank after looking at a few sites first.

I don't benefit from voting.

Actually you do.

The higher up the chart we are the more likely to get hits. The more hits we get the more new members we get. The more new members we get the greater the database of knowledge we have. We more knowledge we have the more we can help. If the new members can't bring new knowledge we can provide it thereby helping them and the hobby.

Benefit enough I would have thought.

I am wondering if all members know how to vote?

It would be interesting to hear why members do not vote at all.

Do members realize they can vote once every day.

It was long time before I found out how to vote. I vote 99.9% of every time I log on.

It is also supprising to note how often it is down or not working.

Keith
