I came home to pick up the bf as we were going out last night and saw him staring at something on the ground in the parking lot of our apartment complex. I'm like, dude, let's go, what on earth are you doing? As he gets into the car he says, "there's a dead fish over there, like your sucker fish." I was like, "you're Sure it's dead?" To which he replied that it was dried out and stiff as a board.

Sure enough, when we went to investigate there was a good sized pleco (about 8 inches, looked like your standard common pleco) dried and stiff by the bumper of a car. The bf picked it up and it clattered when he poked it and moved it along the pavement it was so mummified. It makes me so mad... It wasn't there the other day, but this fish looked like it had been dead a while, and completely dried out.

I'm sorry, but whether the fish died of natural causes or someone took it out to get rid of a too-big-for-a-small-tank pleco, there was no reason to just dump the body in the parking lot. Grr. And if it Was due to someone being naive enough to have a common pleco in a small tank and then just dumping it... I'd happily strangle the person that left it to die instead of finding a new home for it! Sigh.

cruetly to animals. this is where the aspca needs to grow a pair and start dealing more with aquatic cases like this.

such is the reason i do heavy research before i buy any fishes as i tell anybody i know who gets into the fun of fish

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction

You know, it could have been a beloved pet that had died due to other illnesses that had been taken and burried somewhere, then dug up by another animal.

I agree with monkeyboy, there really should be more regulation for this hoby, not just banning snakeheads. Many stats require licensing of various animals kept as pets, it'd be just as easy to include fish such as RTCF that grow way too large for the standard aquarium. I've seen them easily available in pet stores near me. And lets not even go into "painted" fish waters.

This fish was definitely not buried. Not unless the digger washed off the fish and decided not to pick at it, really.

Such a vile thing to do....First off, if it were buried, i dont think that it would have been in such a good condition, and maybe wouldve rotted. I rember i saw a dried pleco in a petstore, that had its eyes and everything intact. Lets say a little prayer for it(All religious people please).........May it live in peace with all the other fishies in the BIG fish bowl in heaven...................I hope it finds my platy up there too.....

What a beautiful fish.... I am sure it's owner loved and cared for it. I have no idea how it came to be where it was. Perhaps the owner was transporting it uncovered and is mourning its loss.

Let's think on the generous side of human nature. It looked like it lived a good long time so I am sure it was treasured.

I suppose so... it's just coming not too long after I was told that one of the members of my church left a pleco to rot in the 55 gallon tank they're giving me.

If I can get my hands on a trowel, I'll give Mr Pleco a burial. Unfortunately, I don't have anything in the way of gardening implements and the ground is still pretty frozen, I'm sure.
