I was wondering what everyone else uses for spyware protection. I recently got DSL and got rid of AOL, my spyware protection was through AOL. I have had Norton Anti-Virus, and Norton Internet Security but I don't have anything for spyware protection. Am I better off paying for one or is there a good one available for free?

Spybot and Ad-aware (both of which are available free) run in tandem are the best I know of. They're what my dad recommends, and he is an IT professional.

Yep, do Google searches for them, they should come up pretty quick.

These are great FREE tools. I have recommended them and been recommended to them as well.

Nothing else comes close.

You should run them once or twice a week.

I run four spyware programs and pay for two. MS are offering a free Beta Spyware at the moment as well. I do not run Spybot as it is not compatable with my main Anti Virus and Spyware supplier.
I do not run any Nortons at all.

I have my Anti Virus, Firewall, and Spyware all with the same company that way thery are all compatable. Also one free phone call I am talking to a technican.

I was strongly advise to run it every day before you shut down this stops any unnecessary nasties carrying onto your next start up.

When you do get it do a full scan just to make sure you dont miss any nasties. What one misses another one picks up.

On a similar topic, can someone recommend a really good, free antivirus? I'm really sick of Norton and the subscription updates.

AVG is really good.

http://www.grisoft.com

then look for the AVG Free Edition under downloads.

But this is the link straight to it

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

Hope this helps. I run this on a couple of the computers I use. Have never had a problem with it.

Thanks RAST, I actually went searching after I posted that question and AVG was the one I chose to download. Good to hear that it works well.

Going to have a big computer maintenance day now, full virus scan, spyware scan, adware scan, defrag, the works! *pats computer affectionately*

MS are offering a free Beta Spyware

Bah - who'd want a spyware remover from the company which is responsible for enabling spyware!!

Beware - a lot of viruses are now being written specifically to avoid detection by AVG, because so many people use it.

Really???

I hadn't heard that. But I would think that this would happen to all virus scanners would it not?? Viruses written to by-pass them.

What is the world coming too!
