"Garlic & Wine Flavoured Rabbit"

Don't know if that's an accurate translation or what country it is from... I just googled the recipe you listed and this came up.

Sounds yummy.

Nah, if it were Welsh, it'd be more like Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

I don't know what country it is from, but I do know that "fenek" is Semitic in origin.

Here is the actual recipe and it is
(Garlic and Wine Flavoured Rabbit)
Being a mad cook I am interested in its origin.
One wild Rabbit recipe I came across said put over a slow fire now that must be an old recipe.

(Serves 4)

1 jointed rabbit
1 bottle of red wine
2 or 3 bay leaves
Oil for frying
A large quantity of garlic - enough to cover the bottom of a frying pan

METHOD:-

Pour about half the bottle of wine over the rabbit and leave for a few hours or overnight.
Peel the garlic and put in a large frying pan with about 3 tablespoons oil.
Heat gently, add as many joints of rabbit as will fit in the pan and fry until brown on both sides.
When all the rabbit is fried return it to the pan and sprinkle it with the wine in which the rabbit was soaked. Add the bay leaves.
Cover and cook gently until the rabbit is tender. This may be one hour if the rabbit is young, up to 2 hours otherwise.
Add more wine if necessary.

Not knowing is driving me mad.
Someone solve the mystery. What language is it?

I launched Welsh and Finnish dictionaries and entered term "Blilmbid". Neither dictionary found the word.

Welcome to 'Name that language'.... today we have some wonderful prizes including community kudos.

I've found a few references to this recipe (although there seem to be a few variations on the spelling) and for the most part the references are to the dish being of Maltese origin, or at least popular in Malta.

HaHa.... Yes it's Maltese, Keith.

I can help you out with something that you might need, even if i never cooked it.

Fenek Bit-Tewn U Blilmbid should have been written Fenek bit-tewn u bl'imbid.

Here is a question for you. Did the English take the Rabbit there too?
The recipe is no problem it was the translation of the recipe name I was concerned about.

Babel Fish Translation does not have Maltese in it at all.
Can you please translate it for me jasonpisani thank you.

No big surprise, Babelfish doesn't even have Turkish in it.

I suspect the Romans brought rabbits to Malta, just like they brought rabbits to England (who then took them some other places)...

Can you tell me where to find the Babel Fish Translation, Keith?.

The tradition of eating rabbit is quite old & i think it was already happening before the English came to Malta in about 1800.

Translation
It has been hard to locate any good wild rabbits most of them now days are the white washed rabbits, breed for the food trade and what I have been told are tasteless compared to the wild bunny.

You really are better off going with food grade rabbits... With the number of biological controls that have been introduced to Aus to combat feral rabbit populations I wouldn't even consider eating a rabbit that was not bred and raised specifically for food purposes.

The taste may not be quite as good as a wild rabbit, but I'd sacrifice a little taste for a product that is more likely to be certified as healthy.
