Hi all,
Just wondering when reading all posts, when tank volumes are being mentioned here, are you talking US or UK gallons
mostly.
Thanks all (because that makes a difference as to whether my tank is holding 81 gallons or 68 gallons.

Regards, Deb

NB: Taking everything out (48" x 24" x 22" inc 2" airspace my tank = 415 Litres/109.73US Gallons/91.37UK gallons) & that could make a huge difference on re-setting up to marine for stock of live rock/sand/fish/inverts etc)
Thanks in advance all

I use US, and I think at this point that's the most common usage on FP. But you can certainly specify, it helps everyone. We should all probably get into the habit of saying US gals or UK gals or liters, not just "the 40 with ..." but faster-to-type often wins the day.

Thanks for clarifying LittleMousling Might be something people checking their tank & asking for stocking advice should be sure of before purchasing stock.

We should, but you lot have gotten me (and most of the Aussies here i might add) into the habit of using USG, I can look at a tank and estimate gallonage, but have to do some comlicated dividing to get back to L (dividing by 4 is not my strongest suit )

Yeah I've also got into the habit of using US gallons here, although I do try to specify USG. This is one of the cases when the country flag comes in really useful - so you can check if you're in doubt about what unit someone's using.

Mostly I tend to use Litres because that's how I've marked my tank, but if I was passing on info to someone asking about stocking quantities/medications etc then I think probably best to clarify the volume either by the asker or the answerer just to be safe.

Thanks for your input guys

I would hope not...when there are 3.78541 L in a US gallon. Actually, it seems silly to make an issue of it, but once you are converting 50 gallons and up, it makes a reasonable difference.

Living in Aust you should be thinking of Lt's some shop assistants would not even know what a gallon was yet alone the difference between US & UK Gall. The best advice is they should be using the measurement of their own country.

you think my dividing by 4 is bad, you should see my dividing by 3.78541!!!

Hi keithgh,
Yes, I use litres for myself, but why I asked was that occasionally I've had a question asked of me from new members on how many fish etc they can put in a tank they have just got of say, 50gal.
That's why I tend to ask the person if they are talking US or UK because I'd hate to tell them one quantity just because I assumed the other.

I have had the same (similar) thoughts too on questions like "What size filter should I use on my 55?" or "how much salt should I put in my 80 gal to make it brackish?"

Interesting
Thanks for thoughts all
Deb

Most of the time I assume it's US gallons, because the people who have UK gallons *usually* specify. I think it would be smart to get used to typing UKG or USG though when posting about tank capacity...

I wonder if we've ever led anyone on the site wrong stocking wise because of a mistake concerning UK/US gallons

And yes, this is an instance where the flags come in handy.
