The bizarre condiment crackdown was prompted because Vegemite has been deemed illegal under US food laws. The great Aussie icon -- faithfully carried around the world by travellers from Down Under -- contains folate, which under a technicality, the US allows only to be added to breads and cereals. Australian expatriates in the US said enforcement of the ban had been gradually stepped up and was now ruining lifelong Vegemite on toast breakfast traditions. Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, said he was stunned when searched for Vegemite while crossing the US border on a trip to Montana recently. "The border guard searched our car and asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty said. "I was flabbergasted. "The official said Vegemite wasn't permitted in the US." Paul Watkins, who owns a store called About Australia in San Antonio, Texas, said he had been forced to stop importing Vegemite six months ago. "We have completely stopped bringing it in, which has been hard," he said. Mr Watkins said some companies were flouting the law by continuing to import Vegemite and hoping the shipments would not be inspected. Vegemite ban: back off, Bush! Your chance to tell the White House that Australians won't tolerate the US ban on our favourite spread - no kidding. Shock, incredulity and downright horror – that has been Australians’ reaction to the news that US has banned Vegemite. And even Americans who can’t stand the stuff think their government has gone too far. “We have terrorists trying to smuggle in weapons, dirty bombs, WMD, we have druglords smuggling in tons of illegal hallucinogen drugs,” writes an American poster going by the screen name of Fair Opinion at the US-ba Another US poster observed, “It's pretty silly for the government to ban something that no native born American will eat in the first place!” Meanwhile, Australian bloggers are up in arms. “I am never going to America,” vows Xochiquetal, while a commenter at Geelong blogger Bernie Slattery’s site foresees US regulators going even further down the road to absurdity, “Americans don’t know what they’re missing … they’ll be banning Tim Tams next.” Clearly, with an international crisis brewing, only President George W. Bush can end the injustice against one of Australia’s most iconic brands and restore the harmony to trans-Pacific relations. If you want to send Mr Bush a message protesting the injustice being perpetrated against Vegemite, click here. Just put your name on the letter and the we’ll make sure it gets to White House. I only found it one place, in a fancy world-foods store in the Grove, Los Angeles. They need to check their labels more closely though. But this is most odd . May be the one thing that will bring my Aussie friend currently expatriated to the US home for good though! The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde |

I wonder what parents in the States would tell their kids in future. "Don't do Vegemite." or "I won't want to catch you on the streets peddling Vegemite. That stuff will kill ya..." But to an Aussie it is our health food of a nation. It is mostly used as a thin/thick spread on bread or toast. It can also be used in cooking. I was once on a small ship with several USA travellers who were all sea sick at one time or another finally they gave in and had some on dry toast(no butter) no more sea sickness. It is full of Vitamin B, I eat a lot of it in the tropics and never been bitten by Mossies. This info/advice came from an Army Doctor stationed in Tropics of Australia. As I said in a previous post fantastic stuff I have it ever day.
