WARNING Using old tank water. | |
keithgh *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 6371 Kudos: 6918 Votes: 1542 Registered: 26-Apr-2003 | Because of our drastic water restrictions last week I tossed 45Lt from my 5ft tank on to my small but good lawn. Three days later the lawn is burnt where I tossed the water. If it will do that to a lawn what will it do garden/pot plants. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. I use and have used for years the water from my tanks to water household plants, my vegetable garden and have placed it on my lawn and have never had any ill effects. I would think that it was something else that caused the damage to your lawn. Jim |

keithgh *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 6371 Kudos: 6918 Votes: 1542 Registered: 26-Apr-2003 | That is what had me confused. The only things that go into the tank are at the water change, which is the dechlorinator which has been in the stored water for one weeek, 10ml of Sera Bio Starter and 15ml of a liquid plant food. The only thing I can think of was the water temp. Kunzman96 Hobbyist Posts: 144 Kudos: 91 Votes: 115 Registered: 29-Oct-2006 | What was the temp outside on those days? Was the sun up and blazing down? Where I live, during the summer months we water in the evening when the sun is going down. Otherwise the sun is magnified by the water and it frys th lawn. Could this be it? I would not think that there is anything in your water that could do that. "Talk is cheap. Action can be almost as affordable" |

Other than that I don't see how tank water with no medications added could cause a problem. I used to dump endless gallons onto one area of the yard at my mom's house. 2years later it still has greener grass than the rest of the lawn. My mom also used it for several of her indoor plants for years and now has a 12' high dracaena that is starting to bend from touching the ceiling. Most of that water also had various plant fertilizers added. |

As far as watering plants our home is on the average block but all around the home is garden and trees including about 2000 orchids so as for watering I am fully aware of watering during the hot hrs of the day. After a little bit of rain one night it is starting to colour up again. superlion Mega Fish Posts: 1246 Kudos: 673 Votes: 339 Registered: 27-Sep-2003 | Hmm I hadn't thought about sunburn. Terrestrial plants have an outer cuticle that protects them from UV light. I wonder if the watering affected the cuticle some way and the plants burned because of that. ><> |

Dont fertilize: same reason you cant hand someone that's starving a cheeseburger, too much at once. I doubt there'd be that much nitrate in your tank water keith, you do keep up on your water changes...but it might be too much for a lawn that doest get water. Water early in the morning: if you water during sunlit hours then yes the water will burn the grass, if you carefully pour the water around the plants you should be okay, but I'd do it only after making sure water burn was what caused the grass to burn and not the over fertilization. By watering in the evening you allow for rot to set in due to the water sitting on the ground all night. Hope that made sense, it's 3am . ^_^ |

My aunt never waters after 8am(unless it's directly into the soil with nothing getting on the plants) and so almost always waters in the evening after 5pm. She has huge gardens setup and most of her 20acre "yard" is landscaped. When I was younger I would get paid to weed everything. Now after all that I learned from that why is it that I can't grow anything above water except a cactus? My cactus is even looking sad and my reddish colored cactus died. |

I used to able to grow plants indoors, but it took extra lighting, fertilizer, knowledge of the plant, just plain maintenance. We've moved since then......... not much room & hubby stole my shop lights anyway. Now I have just two plants by a window & use the liquid Miracle Grow on them whenever I water them. I keep a spare milk jug filled with water & I believe about 28 drops of Miracle Grow to the gallon. They are both easy to grow & doing fine. One is a pothos & the other is called a "cast iron' plant. So called cause it supposed to be almost indestructible! That's why I bought it when I saw it! |

I would ride in the pasture with no saddle or bridal. Out of the pasture I had a bridal for better control. Though I had a saddle, I rarely used it. Yeah............ they say for the perfect career you should find out what you love to do & then find a way to get paid for it! |

Calilasseia *Ultimate Fish Guru* Panda Funster Posts: 5496 Kudos: 2828 Votes: 731 Registered: 10-Feb-2003 | I'm reminded at this point of something I said to a woman at the supermarket checkout last year when she expressed surprise at my culinary plans for Christmas dinner, especially as I was the one cooking it ... "I can cook ... I can sew ... someday I'll make you the perfect wife ..." Now I can add to the list that I'm used to dealing with troublesome infants ... in the form of my baby Pandas of course. All this and I keep fish too. Seriously, though, terrestrial gardening is not one of my fortes either. Not because the assorted specimens that I plant don't grow, it's more a case of my efforts being subject to a veritable Mongol horde invasion of weeds the moment my back is turned. Sometimes the weeds stage such a blitzkrieg campaign that I can actually see them growing in my soil. Nettles love me for some reason - if ever Nettles become a cash crop, I'm an instant multimillionaire. |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | I attempted a garden once. The crabgrass drove me nuts. It takes over the yard too. Even when you block it from growing straight into the garden it goes down into the ground and pops up. Then you go to pull the plant out and this root starts coming that ends at your barrier. Dig down to it and it goes 2' out across the yard before reaching the next plant. By the end of the year I got 2 tomatos, some lettuce, and a handful of strawberries along with grass as tall as my head. At least the guinea pigs were happy. They don't care if all I grow in my garden is grass and weeds so long as it's green and they get lots of it. |
