This may seem like a strange thread but after talking in chat recently and mentioning the Wattle tree several good people were interested to know more about them. We also mentioned the sweet creamy vanilla scent that comes with late winter (when alot of wattles are in full bloom)and how beautiful it is BUT it also makes many people very uncomfortable with allergies

The Fringed Wattle (Acacia fimbriata) at my place is just finishing it's first full sized bloom but it still looks beautiful....

There are about 750 species of Wattle in Australia (our largest plant group)ranging from small shrubs to tall trees, some seeds are used as bush tucker and some of the larger wattle trees are used for timber like Blackwood (coming from the Black Wattle,Acacia melanoxylon.

I hope someone found this interesting

That is certainly a loverly species. I only have one young slim species (lost name) in our garden. It is in flower now.

In the area where we live there are plenty of the Black Wattle.

Nice ....funny name though
That's what was said in chat too Babel, I've never thought that but it seems to be a great source of amusement to our American friends

trystianity, they're now selling them commercially in North America so you may be able to grow some in your area as well

It is a funny name, made me laugh when I read the title! Never heard of one before, it looks cool though.

Sorry for the confusion

It is not the colour of the flower it is the colour of the bark/wood. The timber has been known to be sold as Black Wattle wood to the furniture trade Also Qld Black Wood. It is a native tree in our area also other parts of Aust.

We also have a lot of wattles in New Zealand. The most common in the north is the Sydney Golden Wattle. A beautiful tree that attracts a lot of small, nectar-eating birds.

I grew up in a tiny village called Acacia Bay on the shores of Lake Taupo. Wattles (Acacias) hold a lot of very fond memories for me. Ever noticed how a fragrance can bring back more powerful memories than almost any other sense?

I couldn't agree with you more about familiar smells being the best thing in bringing back memories, I wonder why?
