Wet Season must be almost here... the frogs have started again | |
Gone_Troppo Enthusiast Posts: 285 Kudos: 196 Registered: 13-Mar-2007 | I can always tell when the wet season is approaching... the frogs start their partying, making plenty of loud noises. I found this little guy (or gal) just outside my back door this evening. They come out of the box at night, paddle in their mini swimming pool and sit under the outside spotlight for free bugs. The other night a storm came and they all (about 13 green tree frogs) took off into the night looking for somewhere to breed. So far only one has returned. |

We often have tadpoles in the dog's water buckets, and have occasionally raised them to "froghood" in a tank then released them into the yard. With the dreaded Cane Toad making it's way toward my backyard any other suggestions to help keep our native frog population happy and safe would be appreciated. I now wince every time I hear on the news that some agency or branch of the gov is thinking of introducing a species "we've got it right this time folks!" And there's the cane toadmovie Oh, we spotted one tree frog at the end of our driveway, adam insisted on picking him up (he tries this with everything) I just wanted to leave the little guy alone ^_^ |

The local black crows have found a way to keep them under control. They attack them flip them over and pick at their soft under belly. Here is a photo of a frog variety unknown in a Bromelaide plant it lived therefor a while. These plants catch water and it remains there for the plant to use. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Frog in Bromelade Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | I once spent the weekend in the city at a 24 hour emergency vet clinic with my dog which was being treated for snake bite. She had become paralised within minutes of being bitten and needed to be put on a ventilator with numerous antivenom doses injected and an adrenalin injection into her paralysed heart to keep it ticking. It was amazing the number of dogs being brought in, in the middle of the night with their eyes glazed over and frothing at the mouth due to them playing with cane toads. Many of the dogs were staffordshire terriers. A good flush in the mouth with copious quantities of water and a few hours later, they all seemed to recover. Many of the dogs had been treated for the same thing before. Apparently they have become addicted to the poison in the toad and get high all the time. By the way, my dog recovered from the snake bite and my pocket got $3,800 lighter. /:' |

Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | I finally got around to taking photos of the actual frog box. Sorry it's a bit grubby due to frogs. It is constructed from wood and screwed to the wall. The frogs sit either in the grooves of the house behind the box or in the actual boxed area of the box. The top of the box is fairly thick timber to insulate against the heat of the sun, and a tin of water above it also helps. The box is under the eaves of the house so not so much direct sun hits the box. I have one end of the boxed section partially blocked with a chock of wood, so the dry wind doesn't circulate through too much. I did have chocks both ends but the biggest frog was too big to wriggle in. If it is really hot and dry I have a squirt bottle of water which I spray in to the frogs. |

This afternoon when I returned from work the bucket is full of frog eggs. G_T Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark.
