From column 8 in the Sydney Morning Herald

"In most suburbs the sight of dead pine trees dumped on nature strips is a common post-Christmas tradition. Not so in the suburbs looked after by Willoughby City Council, where Margaret Goodrick, of Naremburn, has received a notice for general rubbish collections in 2005. The first quarter clean-up is for bulk vegetation, which includes Christmas trees (chopped in half). Unfortunately, these cannot be removed until March 10, so you might as well leave them up for a few more months."

Got me to thinking that someone who has a shredder should have a mobile service. You turn up shred the tree and leave it for the owner as mulch or for an extra $5 we will haul it away. People may pay for the privelege of not having the think kicking around waiting for a council clean up.

Here the people who run garden waste collections do it. I think they charge $10 to take your tree away, then they chip it and turn it into compost along with all their other organic waste.

I bet old Xmas trees are a fire hazard. You see them dumped under people's decks or out their back doors. In countries where Xmas is in mid-summer I don't think that's a good idea.

So yeah, as a seasonal business (employing students in their summer break?) I think that idea has definite merit.

Here the city does it for free and chips 100,000+ trees each year.....making for a huge amount of mulch.

In Holland, they have tree burning night...

I like that plan

Exactly, it is one heck of a night! In the days before it people (often kids) start collecting the old trees, going from door to door. These trees are then gathered on big squares and in parks (designated areas by the firebrigade) and piled up into great heaps of dead trees. Late in the evening all are lit at the same time. It's a breathtaking sight smells good too

HI,
I like the mulching idea better. With all the polution
nearly every large city has (NYC, Los Angeles, Denver, etc.)
I can only immagine what a smoke plume and problem a
million plus trees would cause.

My co-op offers free mulch to everyone, there are massive piles by the softball fields (which sometimes catch fire). All yard waste including used pine trees are collected (special drop off points in january) and mulched then memebers are free to use the mulch on their gardens.

My town already comes through on a specified day and picks up anyones tree that is left curbside. I believe they compost them but I'm not sure.

They pick them up early Jan in my neighborhood here. In England we chopped them up and burned them. It was really warm and smelled great!
