I saw what was labelled a 'home gecko' at the store today...little white/off white guy/girl, supposedly grows to 4", and only $4.99

What kind of setup is required for them...tank size, bedding/substrate, food, water, heat, lighting? What kind of temperament do they have, what care and maintenance is required?

Any info or links to helpful websites would be greatly appreciated.

Ahh, the all to common House Gecko... not the best starter gecko.

A little 4-5 inch light coloured gecko. If you're looking for somethign to cuddle, don't bother. They're nocturnal, very fast, and tails detatch easily, making them NOT for handling. A minimum of 10 gallon tank with a secure screen top lid for ventilation and heating and lighting accomodations. A temperature gradient is the best for geckos (having a hot side and a cool side) with the warm side and basking places being at 90 degrees and the cool side being cooler, around 70-75, so they can regulate their heat.

A substrate of mulch type, and lots and lots of climbing and hiding spots. A dome heat lamp with a nocturnal heat bulb in it for nighttime, and a sligtly stronger one for daytime. Being nocturnal, they don't need UVA or B rays, so a flourescent bulb is only for aesthetics.

Feed babes twice a day with small crickets, some small mealworms and waxworms that have been dusted with calcium powder. Adults eat the same food, but less often, once a day or once every other. (yes, live bugs!)

Being aboreal, they probably wont' drink from a bowl of water, so be sure to mist the tank causing little droplets on the glass and decorations once a day. Put in a water bowl, but don't go ape, just a little shallow one will do, because no matter what, all the crickets will end up in it dead.

Be sure to wash hands prior to and after handling the bugs, or anything in the tank for safety Change the water bowl as needed or once every two days, and remove the little fecal matters once a day too

Chances are you'll never see the thing, and if you do it'll be running away. There are plenty of other handlable geckos like Bearded Dragons that make much better pets!

Actually Brybenn heating rocks IMO should never be used. Awful things burn many a belly on reptiles. They tend to get hotspots. A under the tank heating pad or just a light is much better.

We've let house geckos out in our house before. They eat bugs and spiders and such . And you've got to love the GEK gek gek noises they make .

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

All I know about geckos is the wild ones I have seen and heard in tropical Aust.

They all seem to hide behind large pictures and any other pieces of furniture against the wall.

Some of the places I have seen them there is certainly no water around the only moisture they would get would be from their prey.

I dont think I have ever seen or heard them during the heat of the day. It is usually very late in the afternoon when you first see and hear them.

ohhh Janna! We have a "store" gecko at work. Boss let him out years ago, he's so big now. Goes around eating our extra crickits and stuff so the store stays nice. And you should see the look on a customers face when he pops out from behind a box or tank...it's priceless!!! But the noise they make is verrrrrry scary.

I've actually gotten into gecko's lately, don't own one yet, just waiting for the day. I have some very intersting links at home to some unique species with wonderfull photos I'm sure you'll enjoy.

I'll link you once I get home.

Don't let it fool you Liana. Tokays are very very nasty lil buggers with razor sharp teeth.

Me: Naw it won't bite I promise.
Brother: Get it off! Get it off!
E.R. Doctor: And how did this happen? hahahaha
