Isn't that what I just said, timmy?

and tetrafan, will you run a speedtest and post the results? a 11 mbps connection on cable is spectacular. What's your upload?

Click on the link in my first post, there are tests that will let you determine actual connect speed...100mbps is off the scale, even beyond a T-1 line IIRC.A VERY good cable modem will run 3mbps.

1236 kbps DOWN and 370 kbps UP.

Moondog, Great site, thanks

Hey I did'nt think cable was faster than DSL. I'm in So. Cal and everyone I talk to says DSL is faster than cable. I'm stoked with my DSL speed (and it's never down).

My DSL company (verizon) told me my cap is 1500 kbps and the local cable company caps out at 400 kbps. So what's the deal.

Last thing, Fish1, are you saying 100mbps or do you mean 100kbps. Tell us what the speed link says that Moondog provided.

In XP, there is generally a "network connection" icon down in the system tray. That is what fish1 is talking about-- when s/he runs his/her mouse over it, it says s/he is connected at the rate of 100 mbps. This is simply your network connection (via your network interface card), not your connection to the internet. For example, had you another computer hooked directly to yours via the ethernet card, you would transfer at the rate of 100 mbps. This is also why sometimes when you're using a wireless connection that icon will say that you're disconnected from the network. You're not disconnected, you just aren't using your nic card to connect.

Most cable connections top out anywhere from 3 to 5 mbps. 5/1 is the highest option we have at my company, and that is only offered if the network in your area can handle it.

karfixer-- a T1 line is a synchronous 1.5 mbps connection.

Some good speedtest sites off the top of my head:

http://speedtest.wi.charter.com/
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/
http://speedtest.chartermi.net/
http://speedzone.stlo.mo.charter.com/

I'm on Roadrunner as well, and it blazes wonderfully. Then at school it's an Ethernet connection (not sure exactly what that means, but anyway ...) which is, amazingly, even faster.

100mbps is probably what your card or the modem will handle, not the actual net connection.

I got 56k

My brother had T3 for 3 years...it ran an average of 60-70 mbps... quite nice...

That was back when Napster had just come out and was still perfectly leagal. A bucnh of other people in the area were sharing the T3 connection with him (that's how he could afford it) so they could download music off of eachother's computers...we ended up with about 20 GB of MP3's off of that deal...then I got another 25 GB of MP3's...

Do they sell 80 GB iPods yet?

Here at work I am getting 2114 kbps down, 2776 kbps up.

EDIT:
At home I'm getting 3366 kbps down, and 209 kbps up on my cable modem.
