Hey fish1, 100 mbps/sec is the max speed of your ethernet card, not your connection to the internet. Both cable and DSL speeds are capped significantly slower. For instance, my cable modem is provisioned for 3 mbps down, 384 kbps up. To find out what your speed actually is, call your provider or run a speed test.

2591 kbps download / 239 kbps upload

edit - that is the actual speed. Connection is supposed to be 3000 kbps download / 256 kbps upload.

technically none, my puter is still sadly unnetworked cos BT want 45 for an ethernet ADSL modem And I really cannot be doing with setting up my spare puter as a server just to save 45!

But my parents PC has 512K ADSL

If I was in Europe, I will get the 18gbps internet connection, too bad its only for large companies and over $30,000USD a month.

To me cable is good enough

http://www.dslreports.com can give you a free speed test from several different servers. (in the US anyway ) don't know if they have anything for overseas people, but the test would probably still work just the same.

edit: i'm on dsl and i just tested for 1192 kbps d/l speed and 212 kbps u/l speed. considering i'm paying for 768/128 kbps i think i'm doing alright

I don't know the actual speed of mine as far as numbers go, but I have Roadrunner Cable and it blazes through things. I LOVE it!

I have a cable modem, usually checks out about 1024kbps down, don't remember the upload speed. I had DSL-PPPOE-for quite a while and had bout the same speed but the ping times were absurdly long. Check out http://www.speedguide.com just tested 1448kbps down 177 up
