Knowing another language wouldn't be much fun if you had no one to speak it with. I had 3 years of German and my Grandpa came from Germany. Since he died I haven't used it much. Pick the one someone you know speaks.

It isn't common for Latin to be taught in Australia (unfortunately!), so that probably isn't an option for you. Personally I love French, I learnt it for 5 years at school and then a little at uni, and I found it quite easy and fun. However, in Australia Japanese is probably going to get you further job-wise - but only if you get really good at it and/or continue to learn it after high school. Foreign languages only stick if you really keep it up, or spend time in a country that uses that language.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde

Sorry Dude get a good spell check or learn to spell correctly.

The English language though not actually based on Latin it certainly will help in later life when your are trying to work out an unknown word. Select a language that will be beneficial to you, or one that you will pass easily. When you are going for a job the employer will be more interested in your pass rate rather that the actual language you have done. Having said that certain jobs might require a second language.
I think I would be the worst speller on FP it was my worst subject at school as I just could not understand it and I still do not.
I have often said it my brains are my hands in other words I am a trade person.

Thank goodness for MS Spell Checker.

There are actually four languages spoken in Switzerland.

German, French and Italian are the three principal ones (and tend to be spoken most widely in those parts of Switzerland bordering one of the other countries where those languages are spoken). However, there is a fourth, called Romansch. Romansch is a dialect of Rhaeto-Romanic, and is spoken by about 50,000 native Swiss. This site explains a bit more, though the colour choices make it hard to read even in English (sigh, why don't people design web pages better than this?).

Romansch is very definitely a minority language, but has official status in Switzerland. This means that it has a good chance of surviving into the future, unlike some other languages that at the moment are more widely spoken, but do not have official status in their native lands (unless I am mistaken, Basque falls into this category in Spain, unless the situation has changed).

The definitive online source describing the Romance languages is this Wikipedia entry.

including :
chinese, japanese, spanish, italian, a teeny bit of french, and a small amount of hebrew.

I also studied ancient history, so I know a bit of latin also. Also know a little bit of classical greek.

but as i said, enough to get me into trouble

Careful choosing German because your cousins live in Switzerland. Swiss Deutch is apparently different not only in vocab but structure. (Austria, Germany, Switzerland all have diff dialects - school variety German may help but they are all different)

I think you are trying to project which is going to be most useful to you in the future. And who knows what is down the track?

The difficulty in being Australian is that we are so geographicall isolated to the countries that speak these languages AND English is spoken in so many places we can get away without a second language. Both these things are a barrier to Aussie studetns continuing with a second language to the end of highschool.

Just to add another thought....
learning another language sets off a process within the brain. You are actually learning to learn. So it may not really matter which one you choose. The act of learning a 2nd lang makes subsequent languages easier as your little brain synapses have been exercised in a way that is unique.

Perhaps this is why so many people with a 2nd language pick up a 3rd, 4th etc.

Just a thought

I took 13 years of it from kindergarten to grade 12, then promptly attempted to forget it, but now with my daughter in full French-immersion school, it is coming back to the point were I am almost fluent again. Fortunately, my German, Latin, and Gaelige have remained intact.
