Okay

I got a softwater system added to my new house. I also got an under the sink RO unit also. However I have had some strange readings.

My softwater is connected to only the hotwater side. I tested my water with liquid reading kits and found that my PH on the hotwater side is 8.4 and the cold water is 8.2. I thought softwater meant that the ph would be lower because the kh and gh is lowered also. Can someone help me with understanding softwater and the KH and GH please. I will do my best to get those readings over the next couple of days.

Thanks

Shane

Hi Shane,
Assuming that your test kit is not test strips and that
it is not out of date, I would contact the contractor who
installed the system and talk with them. It definately
sounds like something is outta wack. Perhaps they have
the wrong membrane in the RO unit.

Mr frank

Thanks for your reply, actually the RO water is registering at 6.6 which is awesome i just cant get alot from it. I was trying to see if someone knew more about water softeners because i feel that is out of wack...

Hi Shane,
The RO reading makes sense. From your comments I did not
get that. As far as the specifics of your particular
system, I would contact the contractor or the manufacturer
of the system and ask them. Some use resins, others use
brine tanks, and so on. See what they have to say and
how they explain your readings.

Mr Frank

I spoke with the technician today who came in to install a new water filter into my system. So here is how it goes which is really weird

I have the water come in and go through a filter, it then goes into the water softener then into the system. The cold water is not on the water softener. So i did some more PH testing today and got these results

Hotwater - 8.6 as before
Coldwater - 7.6

So when i showed this to the tech, he told me the softwater system is supposed to balance out the PH, so to keep testing it and if it doesnt come down in about a month then to call them. I still think its weird that the softener raises the PH and not lowers it.....

Hi,
Well, I'm venturing out on a limb here because I don't know
your system. However, passing the water through the salt
brine will add metals such as magnesium and calcium to your
water which, in turn will make the water hard (as far as
your hardness kit is concerned, and raise the pH toward
8. Remember your hardness kit measures the concentration
of primarily those two elements. Once the brine system
is functioning correctly (seasoned) it will adsorb the
Mg & Ca and the hardness will go down, probably with the
pH.

As far as the RO is concerned, how much "RO Water" you
get out of the system depends upon the time the system
is running, the membrane, and the quantity of water that
passes through the system. If the quantity is restricted
by the size of the tubing, or the pressure of the system,
then the output can be down from "normal."
That being said, again depending upon the system, and its
capacities, initial water quality and the membrane, will
determine the output. In any case, it can take gallons
of "raw" water to turn out pints of RO water. It is a very
"wasteful" type of filtration system when thinking
of water conservation.
