The new house I moved to has well water. At my old house I would let the water from my faucet sit for 24 hours and add it to my tank after it has settled. Can I do that with well water? Is it bad for the fish?

Hi,
All of us who have wells should have the water checked
at least annually. Along with potability, you can also
have it checked for other characteristics.
A typical multipurpose aquarium test kit will allow you
to test it yourself and see what the pH, GH, KH is.
You can also test for potassium and other minerals.

As far as if it is harmful to your fish. I doubt it.
The KEY to the change over is to acclimate the fish
gradually to the new water. I'd do that by bringing
water from the old location to the new location and
filling the tank(s) with freshwater from the old home.
Then do 5-10% changes each week, or for more sensitive
fish, perhaps every other week and use the new well
water to replace it. Another option would be to use
the new water as "top off" water and eventually you
will be 100% well water and the fish have slowly
acclimated to the change.

Also, well water doesn't have chlorine or any chemicals you can age out of it (if it does, there's a bigger problem than what you're going to do with your fish tank ). The minerals in it aren't going to evaporate. Letting it sit won't do much good. It's also according to where you live and what kind of local water they have. In GA I had completely neutral well water, it wasn't hard or soft, the ph was good. Then I moved to florida. Now my water is extremely hard, alkaline, and the ph is high. Which is exactly why I told my husband he could have cichlids or livebearers. Treating water for my fish gets so old. As long as you have healthy fish the acclimation should go well. Unless they're sensitive to certain water types. I would have the water from both places tested so you know what they're coming from and what they're going into. Unless it's a huge difference, I wouldn't worry too much.

I always had to let the well water sit 48hours because it was full of co2 but otherwise letting water sit does nothing. Even tapwater is likely to contain chloramine now which won't go away just by letting the water sit. You can leave it for as long as you want but chances are it won't do much of anything to the water for bad or good.
