Hi All Was wondering if the above would work with a bag of nutrient substrates my girl-friendbrought me.Its JBL Aqua Basic plus.See i have never use something like that and i thought i might make it better by mixing it with bag of burnt-soil $2.00 i saw at the flower shop.
Also one of the instruction on the bag saids "Place a 4cm layer of washed gravel with a grain size of 2-3 cm on top(Do not use any larger gravel) "
Hmm. i am puzzled. so am i suppose to put the aqua plus at the bottom and put a layer of gravel on top. 4cm would that be too high

4 cm wouldn't be to high because you can shape the floor to have little hills and some fish like to dig in the gravel

Hi and welcome to FP

It all depends on what size of tank you have, and it's recommended to use up to a 5cm high substrate bed, also depending on what kind of plants you are going to plant in your tank. For example, if you are planting swords or crypts they get most of their nutrients from the substrate and they develop large root systems, so you want to give them more space. Most of the stem plants get most of their nutrients from the water column.

If the bag says 4cm I would go for it, you can mix it with fine pea gravel, besides you can always add more later.

Good Luck

If you have access to a Magnum filter or a diatom filter, you can run those in the aquarium to knock down the dust faster. If not, let it settle over time. You need to go through the cycle so be patient.
