A pet store near me has a bunch of "african root wood" that they are selling, and i liked the look of it, so i was wondering... Does anyone know if it will leak any tannis( i think thats the word, the brown water stuff.) Or if it will have any affects on my water, This will not be for a chiclid tank, its going to be a planted tank, and I dont want to add anything that will greatly raise or lower my normal tap water. Thanks for the help.

Mark,

I only have heard once before about African wood, and that was wood which hadn't been submersed previously and seemed to fall apart in a short period of time. But this might not be the one you have seen.

IMHO, all wood that hasn't been submersed for an extended period of time will leak tannnins in the water. It is always suggested to soak driftwood for at least a few days in a bucket. Here you would see quickly how much coloration the wood causes.

Basically, there should not be a noticable swing in ph based on driftwood tannins. And fish usually don't mind them either. It is the people that have a problem with it as it makes the water a little brownish. Also, frequent water changes will keep it at bay.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

Being an old wood worker I strongly suspect there is no such timber as African Root Wood. It could be just a fancy name or timber imported from Africa.

Saying all that it would be impossible to even guess any thing about that timber.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
