I have a piece that is like 3 weeks submerged, the dang thing still wont stay down on its own accord... I have rocks keeping it down now... really how can I get this thing to stay down on itw own

Some wood doesn't and some wood takes months. You can screw it onto a piece of slate or leave it sitting with the rocks on it for awhile longer and see if it sinks. Boiling might speed up the process if it is going to ever sink but don't boil too long because it breaks down the wood.

Some DW will never sink no matter what you do. If it has to be screwed down there are two methods one is a strong plastic/nylon or stainless steel, these screws these can be used when you use slate as it drills easly using a masonary drill.

Can you boil it? It opens up the wood a bit and can sometimes let the water penetrate deeper. It does speed up the decay process slightly, but if it isn't sinking, it is probably not going to have it falling apart in a hurry.

the driftwood in my tank didn't float at all when i put it in water. i got it from a freshwater creek so it could of been in water for years before.
