It is very likely that I will have to fix my piece of DW to a piece of slate to position it the way I intend to display it.

Questions.

What is the best/strongest way to do that?
I was thinking of using Stainless Steel screws.

If it is fixed to the slate what do I place between the slate and the glass bottom?

I don't have anything between the slate and the glass. I just scoot it down into the gravel and voila!

Hi Keith

You can silicone glue some of those rubber pieces that are used to avoid kitchen or bathroom doors or cabinets from slamming. I'm not sure of the English name, but are round small and black, some come with adhesive already

Keith

I use SS screws, but I coat the threads with bit of silicone glue if I'm attaching the wood prior to soaking first and the wood is dry.

I'd look out for plastic screws instead of metal ones.

Such things do exist, but they tend not to be easy to get hold of. Fortunately one of my local DIY stores supplies such goodies if ever I need them.

The way to use plastic screws is as follows.

[1] Drill some holes in the bogwood where the screws are to be inserted.

[2] Insert some plastic Rawlplugs (these are the bits of plastic that are used to provide additional grip for masonry screws when fixing a shelf to a wall). Ensure that they are the correct size.

[3] Insert screws through holes in slate, then into bogwood.

It's advisable to pre-drill for this exercise. A washable (i.e., water soluble) marker pen can be used to outline the wood where it mates to the slate base. Then, once the holes are drilled and the pieces fit together, remove the slate and scrub off the marker pen doodles.

Another possibility is those plastic pop-in attachments used for securing PC motherboards to a chassis. MUCH better than exposed metal in contact with water. And the beauty of such fixings is that they can be used in a marine aquarium where metal screws would constitute a toxicity hazard.

Hope this helps.

All that info sounds very interesting. It is the old story there are many ways to do the same job and all work.

I will chase up the Plastic screws even if I dont use them in the tank. I certainly see a use for them in wet areas of the home.
Thank you all
