There is a brackish iver close to my house that i go swimming in, it is fairly clean water with loads of fish in it.
It also has some pretty nice and wierd looking wood in it.
I read that if you soak it in water for a month, with 30% water changes twice a week + adding a multy disease cure in the last week it will be safe for the aquarium
Is this right?

It can be.

You may want to make sure that there are no industrial locations upriver from where your getting it from. Also, depending on farm areas in the region it may get some agriculturial runnoff which will also be absorbed by the wood.

If you're sure that the water is safe, and you're willing to put it in the tank. I'd suggest boiling it for 20-30 minutes if it's small enough to fit in a pot. If not it can be baked carefully in the oven at a low temp for awhile (careful this will make the house smell ).

As a last resort if the wood is sstill too big for the oven you can try soaking it in a tub with a 10:1 water : bleach solution. Then use plenty of dechlor and rinse rinse rinse riseX42.
Multi cure disease is a good idea too, although may be overkill.

just pay some attention to it during preparation
but from what you said, it's found in a river with plenty of fish, it shouldn't be heavily contaminated or the fish would died

what fish do you have in the tank that you are planning to put the dw in?

good luck

there is a few farms around where i live but up stream there are mountains with bushland over them.
there is heaps of fish in it, we go fishing regularly
I have not set the tank up yet but i am planning on a school of angel, a school of pearl gouramis, a bushynose cat(maybe) and maybe a couple of apistos.
a friend of mine has a tank with angels and rams in it and everything in it(except for the fish and mechanical stuff) is from upstreem were the water is fresh(Sand, Wood
,plants and rocks).
the fish have no problem wih it.
