I found some awsome rocks at a river when I went trout fishing this weekend. They are the kind that are flattish/round, you know like river rocks. I have been wanting rocks like this for my tank, was gonna buy some but I figured this will save me some money.

Any ideas to help make then tank safe? As far as cleaning/ and what not goes.

I can post pics tomorrow if you would like.

If you're pretty sure the river isn't polluted (I assume you wouldnt be fishing there if it was ) then a good scrub with some aquarium salt will remove anything thats clinging to the outside.

I personally prefer to boil the rocks for a bit to kill off anything that might be in any cracks, some say that's a bit of overkill but I like to be sure. Just don't use a new or nonstick pan. Usually I use an old plastic container in the microwave.

Otherwise rocks are pretty ease. Good job on finding fish stuff free .

Thanks Babel, I was hoping to get a reply soon, so I could switch them out whenever I did a WC today. Im sure the fish will love them.

I will still post pics just to show everyone.

(I caught no trout though)

I'd bleach them if they aren't porous. I've done it plenty of times. Toss them in a 5g bucket and add about a half gallon of bleach then fill with water to at least halfway or until the rocks are covered. Leave overnight and rinse well the next day. Then I usually leave them to soak for a few hours in a bucket of tapwater with a generous dose of dechlorinator but I know most people just settle for the rinsing well. Kills all the odd critters that might hitchhike in and loosens any dirt so it's easy to rinse off.

You can boil them in a big pan or roast them to really hot in an oven too.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I was planning on rinsing them well, with some bleach maybe, then boiling them in the microwave like Babel said. I will post pics like I promised lol.

If you are going to boil them I think it would be far safer to do it in a pot on the stove reason if there is an air pocket in any one of the stones it "could" explode.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
