See, that's ego-stroking but not terribly helpful!

C'mon, the stem plants are a mess - look at that one stem of L. peruensis in the middle of the vals on the left! There's no excuse for that. And the lilies are too low to be a good middleground plant, and the area around the anubias is a mess.

Follow-up question: if I were to replace the two pieces of driftwood with rock (which could of course be covered with plants to make it stand out less), what kind of rock do you think would be best? (Feel free to just suggest rocks, not tell me to keep the wood )

That's very sweet! Well, I wasn't planning a huge alteration, just to clean up the some of the messy spots, mostly. Thanks, you made my day.

But I'm still going to go home and fiddle with stem plants!

I am possibly going to you the shortest reply I have ever given for one reason only. I have repeatly looked at your tank since you posted the question and I just cannot find any reason to adjust or alter it. It just looks so peaceful and natural.

See, I like the vals as a sort of background - you don't think clearing them out of the big lefthand section in favor of some stem plants would be enough?

I'd put the vals into a corner and let them grow out. Then fill up the bag with some larger plants. I think the vals are a bit distracting when you look at it.
