I am planning to make a cave. I'm wondering are clay/plastic flower pots safe for aquarium? I am planning to use aquarium sealant as glue to attach gravel and fake plants to the pots.

If not clay/plastic flower pots what do you recommend?

Thanks in advance.:%)

Clay and plastic are both fine. Just be sure they are well cleaned with a good scrub in hot water, no soaps.

Silicon is also the safest route.

It may not be the best looking, but I've seen P.V.C. pipe that offers a great cave. You can also buy it in black to make it look a little better. I have also seen pots used and it looks o.k. I would use driftwood, but that runs expensive. The silicon is non-toxic and safe for fish, at least thats what home depot said when I called them.

Natural slate flooring tiles work great for doing caves and rockwork. I get them at Home Depot, like $3.79 each 12X12. I break'em and see what I get and go from there.

Are you referring to the red/brown Tera Cotta pots?
Yes they are OK but to be on the 100% safe side buy new ones unless you can be 110% sure there has been nothing in the pot that could leach out. I certainly wood soak and scrub, several times also change the water for each soaking.

I will not comment on plastics but there are that many different types. I would be carefull as they age they could start to break down and omit nasties.

I have said "Could"

There are some photos up now that show one pot on top of another looking like the Sydney Opera House. Have a look to see if you can locate them. If I locate them I will contact you PM or get the person who has them to contact you if they possiby can

I agree with the other replies

One thing to remember though is if you do any cutting or breaking make sure you file the edges as they can be quite sharp.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the great advice.

I just bought 2 small flower clay pots from home depot.

I'll soak it, scrub it, soak it more, then scrub more...for a few days. Then start the cave making.

Thanks all.
