Mangrove Root Look--How do I get it??? | |
jungle-jim Enthusiast Posts: 207 Kudos: 223 Votes: 0 Registered: 15-Jan-2004 | I want to set up an AGA 150-gallon tank. Starting in the left front corner, and moving diagonally toward the back of the tank about 3/4 of the way across to the right, I want to have something resembling mangrove roots coming down into the water. On the right, I want to have a rock pile. In the middle, I'd like to have some tall plants toward the back with low growing plants in the front. Any ideas on natural or good-looking-fake (GLF) mangrove roots? Also, are there any aesthetically pleasing ways to have an open-top tank but prevent fish from jumping out? |

Or, the best way, is to take the top off the tank, have at least 3 inches of substrate, and plant mangrove seedlings. Use a pendant style light system ( a kind of a floodlight) and allow the seedlings to grow up, and out of the tank. Remember that this would be a brackish water tank which opens up the opportunity for different fish and plants. Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

Actually, I don't want this to be a brackish tank, and I'm concerned about fish jumping out (to their deaths at the paws of my two cats), although I like the look of pendant lighting and open tanks. I guess what I'm really looking for is a source of artificial mangrove roots (ie, a brand name, or a retailer that carries them), or a DIY way of making something look like mangrove roots... Using bogwood/driftwood would work, but it would take forever to find the right pieces, and that stuff is usually pretty expensive! |
