Also, maybe try to integrate a background. You're tank will photograph a lot better with a background. How about making a mosaic on a one side of the tank...*thinks about the massive amount of work that would take*

Or even some cool paper with an oriental pot theme..

I rate that Zen idea highly.

I've got a 2 gal betta tank and with some fine gravel, and a fork, some sunken rocks to give it that proper look, and just for fun a few Chinese Fu Dogs to give a proper asian feel.

Yep
I'm sold!

calla, you're just looking for more "zen" tanks, aren't you?

did anyone ever say how big the tank is?

OK, offbeat and i dont know if it would work, but how about a raked zen garden look?

Mix sand/fine gravel with silicone and spread on a sheet of aetate/overhead sheet and 'rake' with a comb or fork....?

you could lay the acetate on the floor of the bowl.

It could work... not sure if the bowl is large enough tho.

If possible, both. Tile is now out of the question; if I intend for it to have a snug fit with the hex, I'd have to shave the sides perfectly, as the tank is smaller on the bottom than on the top. Too much work (yes, I'm lazy--what of it? ). Take note that I make this discovery only after blowing 15 bucks on square ceramic inlay with oriental borders, cutting my hand open with the blasted tile cutter, and wasting 3 hours of my vacation. I suppose I'll go with an idea mentioned above and add another pot and several larger stones for a pathway-esque effect.

Bonke, if you were following along you'll see that this tank isn't exactly the "natural" look. Some like plants, but just like any other art form, different people have different ideas, and all are valid.

My bad, I didn't read the post properly. My appologies for exclaiming my ideals too loud.

hmm i would prefer spanish hand painted tile to venetian tile, but with the china in the tank the brightly coloured tiles would contrast too much... great idea though putting tile in a tank... hmm ill have to do something like that

I plan on entering my beta bowl category (if there is one) in the next aquascaping contest, but, as of now, it looks a little bare. Any suggestions?

and yes, I know the hornwort gets a bit messy.

*shudders* Tiles in a fishtank? Maybe it's just me, but I like a natural look in any tank, with lots of plants

Hey!!! good idea tiles!! maybe you can get those small Venetian tiles and even do a kind of pattern in the bottom!! *thinking of running to the tile store tight now* Those Venetian tiles (small tiles used in pools), are the perfect size for a small tank size the only thing that I'm not sure is that they have a mampostery (white chalky stuff, I dont know the English name! ]:|) backing for them to stay in place, so it would be safe to coat them with a transparent lacre coat both sides.

If you go ahead and use these PLEASE post a photo!!

I love Falstaf's idea, guess fishy minds really do think alike because I was going to suggest playing up on the oriental pot as well...especially since it's a betta.
I'm not sure if I'd run without a substrate however. What about tile (not sure whats' tank safe) to make it look like the floor that Falstaf mentions, or Lay out stones exactly in a way that looks like a garden path.

well no, no gravel or sand, but that is only my opinion, IME gravel in betta bowls it's only decorative, holds no purpose and it does get dirty really fast, again, my opinion.

I really like the oriental pot idea, it thin it looks really classy, i would try adding some more, maybe a smaller with smaller plants like anubias, or Hemianthus callitrichoides ''Cuba'' (that is usually used as carpet but can be grown as a vertical plant) and a medium one with a medium plant as a dwarf sag.

I would also get rid of the sand and gravel, in that way the bowl would look as a really clean hall.

How about a sm. flower pot on its side for a house for him? I got a sm. glass bottle that was supposed to be for the ghost shrimp. It's round, flattened, and is an opaque green. He loves it.
