I want to have more rocks/stones in my tank but don't know how much is enough..
I have seen many tanks with lot of rocks..so i was just thinking wouldn't that make a lot of pressure on the bottom glass and maybe crack it...in a 75g how much would you have kgs/lbs?
I want my tank to be like a river system, that means many rocks/stones.
Thanks,
Robby

You can add another glass at the bottom of your tank & then place the rocks on it. Try to even the weight of the rocks & don't put them all in the same corner or side.

The other trick that's used with hardscaped tanks is to use lighting eggcrate under the substrate. This is the grate that goes over some florescent lighting fixtures and is found easily here in the states @most home improvement/DIY stores. Placing this under the rocks will allow the weight to be distributed thruought the tank rather than on the few pressure points created by the rocks themselves.

I was doing a little research recently and came across the same question. This is not my opinion just something I was reading.

The answer was to lay a 20mm thickness of styrene on a perfectly clean bottom this would spread the weight and the uneveness would compress into the styrene. Rather than sitting on a solid base.

Sounds very logical to me anyway.

I have heaps of rocks in my 115g and it hasn't cracked yet. I kinda rushed into my tank and didn't put anything underneath it.

If it's possible it will be a good idea to put something underneath like keith suggested. Just for safety. But if the tank is already setup I don't think it's necessary. Just make sure you evenly distribute the weight of the rocks and make sure there are no sharp edges etc facing towards the glass.

Well, good luck with your tank Robby.

My really ugly and old tank setup with alot of rocks (Doesn't seem like alot but those mountains were basically piled up rocks, and boy were they heavy!):

I used a sheet of silicone coated styrofoam on the bottom.

Hope you dont mind me asking a question on this thread about polystyrene.
I have heavy rocks too to put in my tank and after reading this thread, found some p/s "wall veneer" in the shed. Its quite thin so I would need to double/treble it.

However, it has a fire retardant additive. Will it be ok for the fish do you know?
thanks
