I've recently built a stand for my new 55g aquarium, but I can't decide how to finish it! It's a 2x4 frame with a 3/4" birch plywood shell. I cannot decide if I should risk staining the birch a nice cherry or oak colour and risk potentially ruining it, just varnish it the way it is (very light and bright), or simply stain it black. I'm concerned that as it is, it will detract from the fish by being so light/bright.

Thanks for your help,

Dragonchild

go with a dark wood or a black.. Minwax makes a stain called ebony... which is basically black.. try that with a couple of coats, and a polyurethane coating over the top to protect it! also, with the polyurethane coating make sure you use one that is for out doors, which can handle the potential for water!!!!!! PM me if you have any ?'s

I personally prefer the natural look as it shows the natural beauty of the timber. To me black is dead and lifeless it shows up every mark or scratch, some say it is trendy so what, stick to something which is practical and will outlast all trends/fashions/fads.

Nothing can beat a natural look in wood.
