Never used terralit (haven't seen it before, actually), but I used flourite for my ten gallon. My plants adored it, but I hated it. Even after rinsing (and rinsing and rinsing and RINSING...) there was still a cloud of dust anytime I moved things around in the tank. Even gravel vaccing was a chore, as the tank would be vaguely cloudy afterwards.

I've heard that if you rinse the flourite, then allow it to dry before putting it in the tank, it keeps down the dust factor. I don't know how accurate this is, but I thought I'd bring that up.

Long story short, I wound up ripping out the flourite and putting down regular gravel. My aponogetons aren't flourishing as they were before, but I'm happier with the setup.

I'd never heard of Terralit until seeing this thread. You might try searching some of the planted tank forums like http://www.plantedtank.com]http://www.plantedtank.com[/link] or [link=http://www.aquabotanic.com. A quick google search for me only turned up a lot of websites in German, so I couldn't find any good info.

I found a pretty good website with a nutrient breakdown of several plant substrates.

http://home.infinet.net/teban/jamie.htm

At the very least you can see a comparisson of nutrients between Terralit and Flourite. I can't say whether one is comparable to the other in terms of the benefit to plants though.

Hi Andy,
THANKS for the new site! This is the second on aquarium
substrates that I've seen, and also well done. I've added
it to my "favorites" to pass on to other folks with ??.
