I have a few plants grouped around the top of my tank for a few reasons. They like the heat from the fluorescent lights from their places on top of the hood and also because the fish tank is an excellent source of humidity for them. Here are a few bad pics:

the stuff u got in ur filter will thrive for a long time in water i use t in all my betta tanks, and am eyeing some more clippings

Very efective yes you are correct those plants certainly like the humidity from the tank.
