I went to a few fish stores and I saw some pebbles that are like 5 bucks for 1 pound. They look really nice and I was wondering if anyone else knew where to find those types of pebbles in a larger bulk and for a cheaper price.

I went to Home Depot and they had pea gravel. I was wondering if that is safe for the aquarium. I took a handful and went to their fountain and cleaned them. They are blackish when just washed. But I'm not sure if they will affect any of the water parameters for a 20 gallon guppy tank.

Thanks for any information.

Cheers

See if you can locate any landscape suppliers/gardners.
Also a supplier of outdoor ponds etc

Both those should have what you require.

Pea gravel from homedepot is fine, I've got it in two of my tanks as well as the "pond". Mines a very light color however. In any case it should be okay, I'd just suggest checking a small ammount with some viniger to make sure it won't raise the ph in the tank (unless of course you would like it raised ).
HTH a bit .

I just learned a good trick for the vinegar "fizz" test. It can be hard to see the fizz from the vinegar, so I checked the bottles of reagents that come with a nitrate test. One of them is hypochloric acid. It's reasonably concentrated and it fizzes really well. I tested it on a bit of baking soda and it worked like a charm.

The other thing you can do is that you can put some gravel in a buck with some water, let it stand for a while and then test the pH of the water. If it has raised, then you know you have a problem. I'm currently doing that with some rocks from the landscape supply yard. They passed the fizz test, but I want to double-check, so I'n soaking them in water as we speak. The water here is already basic enough: I don't need any help from the gravel or from rocks. I know I wouldn't have to worry about rocks from the aquarium store, but the landscape yard is a tenth of the price!

I've purchased larger polished river pebbles at Michael's, can't remember the price though.

Cool, I'll check around. I want small pebbles, cause I'm trying to make a fry tank. I know that I should keep it bare bottom or at least have some easy to grow plants or something. But eventually when the fry grow up it's just gonna be their tank.

Thanks people.
