im going to use white sand for my new 110g tank. but when the cheapest sand i can find is $18 for a 20lbs, its going to be be pretty expensive. so i was wondering if there was an alternate that isnt originaly for aquariums?

Hi,
You are probably pretty close to the cheapest way to get
white sand. You could go to the nearest Home Depot or
Lowes and probably get white sand from them in bulk.
Or, try a pool supply store as some of the grades of
sand used for pool filters are white. Another source
could be a plant nursery. They might have bulk sand
in various colors for folks planning home gardens and
landscaping.

The use of pure white sand can make a striking setting
for the greens of the plants and the colors of the fish.
However, it can be a real pain to keep clean, and over time
the white will dull and fade as it turns color with the
debris that stains the grains.
