Common black substrates other than painted gravel include Onyx sand, EcoComplete (Plants), and Tahitian Moon Sand - was it any of those?

What I know about marble would posible fill a pin head, but I have seen it opened mined in Queensland Aust.
I can tell you the chips no matter how small are very sharp.
I personally dont think it is a safe material/natural to use it could do some damage to some fish who like to pick up a mouthful of the base looking for food.

it would seem to me that if its black silica then its probably just dyed silica. i have used a small bag of black silica sand for filling up my 75G cuz i didn't have the extra dough for an additional bag of black tahitian. the only odd thing about it is that some f mine had a tendency to float at first .

so it should be safe if it is silica.
