How much substrate do I need to buy for a 75g SA cichlid tank? Probably fine gravel...I'd like to know amounts for both a planted tank and non-planted tank.

Thanks

Hi,
Go to this site and type in the information requested:

http://www.plantedtank.net/substratecalculator.html

It will tell you how much (pounds) to buy for the
depth you require.

Non planted could be around 1 inch, planted tanks
you want an average of 3-4 inches.

I generally do 1 lb. of substrate per gallon of water. sometimes just a bit less. for instance, my 29 gallon tank has 25 lbs. of gravel. my 150 only has 125 lbs. of gravel because the tank is the same footprint of a 125 just taller. my 75 has 75 lbs. of gravel but I'll admit it's quite a bit. you could probably get by with around 60 lbs.

In a non-planted tank, I would not go over 1 inch. I found out the hard way and ended up thinning it out. When I did my non-planted goldie tank, I put 1/2 inch stones in that just covered the bottom by about 1.5 layers. What a blessing as not too much can get trapped. My 20 long was thinned to 1 inch, except one area where I have rooted plants. The rest are stem plants so I don't need all that substrate. I think too thick of substrate, without roots, provides room for bad bacteria and hydrogen sulfide to build.
