Which is why I and a few others suggested drilled holes in the legos that would allow water circ via an airstone @the bottom of the structure. ^_^[hr width='40%'] The life, the love, You die to heal. Puggle Enthusiast Posts: 224 Kudos: 133 Votes: 0 Registered: 19-Feb-2004 | You could try this instead of lego: http://hirstarts.com/ I built a castle and some other stuff for my tank, but I haven't sealed them yet. The plaster blocks are heavy enough to stay down and there's no stagnant water or air trapped inside. |

justicerulesok Enthusiast Posts: 195 Kudos: 161 Votes: 2 Registered: 27-Jun-2004 | an update... I've done a copule of designs & arranged to pick up the lego after seeing it on Freecycle (so it was 6-7 kilos of used lego free) but after getting lift up (3 hours in the car) the chap wasn't there to meet me, I phoned him & he said he forgot it was his day off & could I go back another day?! I couldn't so no free lego for me...now I'll start saving & buy some & then I can do it in a couple of months time. |

Puggle Enthusiast Posts: 224 Kudos: 133 Votes: 0 Registered: 19-Feb-2004 | The plaster will disolve, so you need to coat it with something non-toxic and waterproof. I'm going to try some epoxy stuff. |

coyote1066 Fingerling Posts: 35 Kudos: 17 Votes: 3 Registered: 01-Jun-2005 | Actually you can also use resin in the Hirst molds. I know this because I've made some for tabletop wargames. I'm not sure if resin is fish-safe as is or needs to be painted and sealed. A lot of the ready made ornaments are resin. You can get cheapy resin at most home improvement stores in the US or buy from a specialty store like Micromark online: http://www.micromark.com/ Search for resin. That would be cool to make a custom set of underwater ruins...hmmm. |

heaven2 Mega Fish Posts: 1065 Votes: 0 Registered: 10-Jun-2002 | I've seen lego pieces recommended for Wet Dry filter media so the pieces are fish safe. I would not worry about water trapped between blocks. Its not as though you'd have food debris trapped in there. If you build a hollow tower or similar structure, I would consider whether or not is was likely to trap fish or debris. Allow for access to siphon out any hollow well (drop down) areas periodically. IMO, drilling each lego piece and trying to force air or water through all of them would be impractical/impossible and undesirable. |

Megil TelZeke Fish Addict Posts: 863 Kudos: 890 Votes: 393 Registered: 21-Jul-2003 | Now perhaps another alternative if you still wish to do lego's would be to use some sort of waterproof sealant and fil upp each lego . |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | Then you get stale water, stagnant water, inside the lego blocks. Isn't that how you get anaerobic bacteria build-up that is rather a bit toxic? |

inkodinkomalinko Fish Guru Posts: 2441 Kudos: 833 Registered: 18-Jan-2003 | Why dont you just fill up a tub of water and build the structures in there so water is trapped inside? The water wouldn't come out since their legos after all, and there wont be trapped air to make it float.... |

Babelfish Administrator Small Fry with Ketchup Posts: 6833 Kudos: 8324 Votes: 1570 Registered: 17-Apr-2003 | Little_Fish, If you are out of your mind I'm with you because that was my idea exactly . If you didn't want the actual bubbles in the tank...just build the castle so it comes out of the tank a bit...the bubbles will pop up there . Only bad thing about legos is stepping on them barefoot >.< ^_^ [hr width='40%'] The life, the love, You die to heal. The hope that starts, The broken hearts... LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | I love legos ... I like the idea of drilling small holes in the top of every lego block. Then you could weight them down anyway, connect a few air tubes to the bottom, and your castle would even bubble from all over the place. Or am I out of my mind (is very likely) |

dogmai333 Hobbyist Posts: 90 Kudos: 79 Votes: 19 Registered: 03-Feb-2005 | like i said above just use silcone to hold the legos together and put enough on ther to squeeze out the air when you put them together. that way you dont have to worry about bacteria or air trying to make it float. i still love the idea, maybe for a tank in my sons room. MONKEYS ARE COOL, BUT SEA-MONKEYS ARE BETTER. |

illustrae Fish Addict Posts: 820 Kudos: 876 Registered: 04-May-2005 | Sealing it with clear epoxy resin would work fine, and I do like the idea of filling self-contained portions of the sculpture with sand/rock/weights. Who knew this would become such an involved project... :%) Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

hembo666 Big Fish Posts: 350 Kudos: 288 Votes: 3 Registered: 01-Apr-2005 | call this a strange suggestion but could you build the castle dry but include a closed column or 2 full of sand to weight it. then paint the entire structure with something to seal it therfore eliminateing the possibility of stagnant water between the blocks. only question really is can you find something to seal it with that is non toxic to the fish and waterproof. |

djtj Fish Master Posts: 1764 Kudos: 885 Votes: 49 Registered: 20-Feb-2003 | I guess.... But I remember putting together two pieces of lego that have chips in them together and it's a real pain in the butt. I can't imagine doing that for the hundreds of pieces you need for a set. It just seems like too much work. Remember, just because you want to do it the right way, doesn't mean you have to do it the hard way. There's a smart solution to every problem. |
